There’s no shortage of talented people at Stone, and each makes their presence known in their own unique way. Brian Gallagher, a brewer who learned the art of fermentation in the UK, used the beer you now hold, a take on a traditional English milk stout, as his vehicle for personal expression. Originally brewed as a limited edition offering at Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens – Liberty Station, this coffee-laced milk stout quickly became a favorite among Gallagher’s peers. Made bittersweet and creamy while remaining smooth and easy-drinking thanks to the addition of milk sugar, it’s clear in one sip why this is a brew we needed to share with fans everywhere.

Rated Jan. 2015. 12oz bottle pours up with a nice dark body that supports a thin mocha colored head. The aroma offers up inviting chocolate, a lactose sort of twang and then faint earthy coffee notes. The taste starts smooth and quickly moves into chocolate and coffee like notes. It rises up into some dark roastiness mixed with a lactose like twang that feels a bit astringent. Tasty brew that delivers pretty nice flavors for this ‘small-ish” beer.

Pitch black with a tan head. The aroma contains some chocolate, coffee, and a bit of dark fruit. The flavor is a bit sweet with some milk chocolate and raisins coming through. The coffee is showing up also. A very roasty mouthfeel on it. Overall Stone does its stouts well and this is another example.

Pours rich sable with a thick and persistent dirty tan head. Aroma features coffee, roast malt and charred wood tones plus just a whisper of chocolate. Flavor is where this cockatiel comes alive, rolling roast malt, coffee, milk chocolate, licorice and molasses tones across the palate. Mouthfeel seems thin for a stout, though it has OK fizz. A modest yet enjoyable stout.

Sampled from bottle, thanks to mef. Pours opaque black-brown with a thin tan head and nice lace. Mild coffee and roast malt aroma. Lots of black patent? Hints of coffee, which is nice for the non-coffee drinker. Like adding a dash to a chocolate cake to accent the flavors. Slightly bitter with a bit of sweetness left in the finish. Enjoyable.

Black color, light brown lacing big foam head. Bitter cold coffee aroma, and similar coffee taste. Long bitter aftertaste. Perfect before sleep beer :) (Houston 201501)

Usual black body, the cap starts of nice and pillowy but recedes fairly quick leaving the occasional spot of lace. Aromas are roasty, plenty of coffee, and hints of sweet chocolate and nuts. Flavor is much the same, bitterness from the coffee, and some hints of soy sauce (in a good way). Overall i liked it nice and sweet, flavorful yet sessionable.

A little thinner than I expected, which reflects in the flavor. That stone quality is still there, just not as rich and malty as some of their other darker beers. Nice balance and very drinkable...just don't expect something like their smoked porter or Russian IPS.

Roasted malt, coffee and chocolate in the aroma and the flavour. All quite mild with a very light mouthfeel. Tasty for a lighter stout. I know you can't taste appearance (gave it a 7 just because it's black) but if this beer looked more presentable I would have enjoyed it more.

Jet ebony black colored beer with a small, two fingered, frothy tan head that roses briefly. Not much hang time on the head. And no lacing. But this does get better. Light coffee nose. That coffee blends well in a roasted malt tasting and a creamy body.

12 oz bottle. Pours dark brown black with a big fine bubbled brown head that goes to a thin film and leaves a little lacing.
The aroma is sweet lactic roast with subtle coffee and chocolate. More ashy roast comes out as it sits.
The flavor is lots of bitter roast with some sweet lactic chocolate and some roast coffee. The mouthfeel is thin to medium bodied and a little watery.
Overall, a nice heavily roasted coffee stout.
