A dark, bavarian-style wheat beer, our RoggenWeizen is a twist of the renowned Bavarian Dunkelweizen, which is a dark wheat beer. Roggen is the German word for 'rye' and weizen means 'wheat'. This beer is made with 20% wheat malt, 20% rye malt and is brewed with a special yeast that tends to stay in suspension, giving the beer its cloudy appearance. Bavarians are so convinced of the healthful qualities of this yeasty brew that doctors there are known to prescribe two Hefeweizens a day to feeble patients. The yeast used for this brew also imparts its unique spicy, clovey flavour. Some people even detect a slight banana flavour. All of these wacky flavours are the natural 'signature' left by this specific yeast strain during its fermentation of the beer and no additional spices are added.

This was the seasonal selection on tap during my last visit to Steamworks. The beer is a cloudy, almost murky, brown color, with a thin cap of foam. It has a distinctive fruity/yeasty rye smell. Lots of spice aromas. The taste has some fruity notes, rye adds an extra dimension, good flavor without being overpowering. Continued carbonation keep it light and refreshing. Slightly nutty, but within balance. Nice body and mouthfeel, dry finish. Unique and Enjoyable.
