Why Rye? A fair question, given this assertively flavored grain is more often associated with whiskey than with beer. Even in that arena, it has largely been eclipsed by corn and barley, the sources of bourbon and scotch, respectively. But when we procured some seasoned rye whiskey barrels from our friends at Templeton Rye, we asked ourselves, "Why not?" Why not brew a rich, tawny rye ale, then mellow it in the warmth of charred oak rye whiskey casks? Thus, Rye-on-Rye: a marriage of very similar, yet very different embodiments of this unique, distinctive grain. Two kinds of malted rye provide a spicy sweetness, giving way to notes of caramelized wood and the citrusy tang of Perle, Magnum and Saphir hops before easing into a dry, lingering finish. Rye-on-Rye’s body and character make it the equal to any sort of hearty stew or aged cheese. At the risk of seeming redundant, might we suggest pairing it with a classic pastrami-on rye? A rye beer with a hint of rye whiskey aroma, alongside a rye bread sandwich. Why not?

Pours clear mahogany, almost cherry, with a thick and fairly persistent buff head. Aroma delivers caramel, toasted malt, woody, and subtle bready notes. Flavor gives a surprisingly strong boozy note, more what one would expect from a barleywine. Woody, caramel, whisky and toasted malt notes continue to play their part. Mouthfeel offers firm, smooth body and OK fizz. Get your rye on - rye.

On tap at Tribes Alehouse. ABV clocked in at 14%. Pours a golden brown color with a small white head. Aromas of whiskey, rye, caramel and vanilla. Flavor follows the aroma, with a fantastic balance of all the flavors. Quite similar to some of the BA Barleywines that I have tasted, but with a strong rye character. Probably had one too many before the ride home, but one was just not enough. It took me quite a while to finish both of them, along with several pints of water. I love barrel aged beers and this one was absolutely outstanding.

Mahogany colored pour with a sticky white head. Sweet aroma takes me by surprise--wheat, molasses, a touch of spicy rye, vanilla and whiskey. Similar flavor but with enough hop presence to keep it from being cloying. High ABV is evident but not in your face. Great sipper!

Attractive red hued appearance with a thick head that I wasn't expecting. Aromas of wheat bread with muted notes of vanilla and oak. Flavors range from black pepper, caramel, and spicy rye intermingled with a nice subtle oakiness that helps cut the spice.

Sampled on 7/7/2012. Bottle # 5223. This rye beer pours a slightly hazy medium dark brown color from a 750ml bottle. Medium to large sized off white foamy head. The aroma is fruity and sweet with a touch of spice, a touch of wood and some whisky sweetness. A medium to full bodied rye beer. The malts are fruity and sweet. The hops are earthy and floral. Nice carbonation. Very smooth tasting, Malts, then the rye spiciness, then the wood and barrel flavors. Very drinkable. Nicely mixed and very well balanced. Great sipping beer. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.

This was one that took a few minutes, but really opened up nicely, leaving us all wanting more by the end. Delicious and aromatic blend of spicy and sweet rye malts, slight (but unique) hop presence, floral, vanilla and whiskey overtones. ABV shows, but it's not hot, and practically begs for another sip. Not what I expected, but really complex, and realy good.

Nice, big hearty brew. The predominant feature is burbon, sweet boozy and rich, followed by a nice oak/ vanilla presence, also some caramel and toffee thrown in for good measure. Overall its a interesting beer, pretty good, and worth a try.

Golden~amber pour with a small film of a head and spotty lacing. Strong rye presence providing a nice sweet dryness and a gritty earthy taste. Hints of English toffee, wood and a hint of leather. Very unique and complex beer, perfect to get my flow going.
