This dark lager was originally brewed as liquid bread to sustain Bavarian monks while fasting. Its sweet complex malt character comes from brewing with many varieties of dark roasted caramel malts and long periods of cold storage (6 months).

Strong, malty aroma has a robust overtone of caramel with just a hint of cloves. Pours a somewhat translucent sepia with an average light tan head. Hearty flavor has malty, caramel, clove, nutty and earthy notes. Smooth, firm texture has a decent fizz and leaves a malty, slightly sweet finish. Not ba-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-ad at all.

Not much of a dopplebock, more a regular bock with high alcohol. No complexity or character, it hits the style points but is very boring and thin in the mouth. Looks good, very deep ruby. Smell is thin and almost sourish, the bock flavor is there but way too thin and doesn't dominate the beer.

This is a real nice, locally brewed beer. And a great bargain at $1.79 plus tax/pint. Pours a good-looking deep copper hue with a generous frothy head and a fair amount of lacing. The aroma has a certain familiar "Sprecher-y" note to it, that I've never been able to identify, but is probably the weakest component of this and some of the brewery's other products. A slightly musty fragrance or something. Dunno what it is. But the flavor is very rewarding, sweet and malty, with a clingy mouthfeel. At a warming ABV of 8.5%, it's a great ale for cool autumn nights. Perhaps for style, this one doesn't measure up to the best domestic and German Doppelbocks, but there are a few Sprecher brews I'll happily turn to as a great match of flavor for price, and this is one of them.

Slight better than average... pleasant nose with a nice deep reddish-brown color and thin head. The flavor presented itself nicely after warming a bit. Would perhaps taste even better in the cooler months, but just saw it in my area and hadda try it.

poured from a biggie flip top bottle .. . pours with a low head, dark ruby brown in the colour . .. chocolate and light cherry pit aromas .. . nice but pretty confusing .. . malt, pancakes with syrup and light chocolate in the flavor .. . decent .. . you mean this is the last time i’ll get to talk to the top half...

This brew shares some of the characteristics of Sprecher's seasonal 'Winter Brew' Bock, but overall that is the better beer. This one poured a ruddy brown with a thin tan head. The aroma was of light fruity dark malt. Medium-bodied with a fruity sweet-sour flavor with light alcohol warming in the sour finish. Disappointing - Sprecher, the brewer of the wonderful 'Black Bavarian' Schwarzbier, should make a better Doppelbock than this.

After sipping on this awhile, it really did get better. Still, my overall thoughts on this beer was it was really one-dimensional from start to stop. A predominantly malty sweet aroma, a bit of oxidation...reminded me in many ways of an English barleywine...but not nearly as refined or complex, just mostly sweet. Appearance was beautiful, a deep chocolately brown color, one finger creamy head with nice deep red highligts around the edges. Flavor is just a two-note song, with sweetness and alcohol playing loud and proud. Still, it seemed to work in a weird way. Not that I'd ever buy cases of it, but the bottle I had was enough. Nice beer on a cool evening.

This is another one of Sprecher's Brewmaster's series that have shown up around here lately. It pours a beautiful reddish brown color with a one finger off white, tightly bubbled head, that quickly disappears. The flavor is sweet and malty and this brew is very drinkable.

Poured a brown with tan head and okay lacing. Aroma was fruity and something, i guess i would agree with eagle bublegum. Flavor was of caramel chocolate hits of spices as it warmed. Aftertaste was a little bitter.

Poured a sure brown color, some clarity to it, nice tan head, good retention. Lacing was ok. The aroma was fruity, doughy, some bubblegum, some vinous notes. The flavor was dark fruits (raisins) / vinous, caramel, chocolate, some brown sugar, somewhat spiced. Could have used a few more hops. The mouthfeel was thinner than anticipated (based on color and the style), but it wasn't bad, maybe a tad acidic.
