Shipyard Applehead is a crisp, refreshing wheat ale with a delightful apple aroma and subtle cinnamon flavor. This beer is available in 6-packs, 12-packs and on draft. “We asked Pumpkinhead fans what other flavors would they like to see and their answer was apple,” said director of sales and marketing, Bruce Forsley. “We listened to what our fans asked for and created Shipyard Applehead. Master brewer Alan Pugsley has combined the subtle sweetness of cinnamon and apple with a clean, refreshing wheat ale to create a whole new beer experience.”

Pours a clear solar yellow with a thick but effervescent off-white head - looks more like a cider than a beer. Aroma reinforces the cider perception, having a strong apple note and some cinnamon as well, just a hint of malt. Smells like a fresh apple pie. Flavor, though, is a little more beer-like; now the wheaty malt comes through, though the main flavor is still apple, and a cinnamon tone accompanies them. Texture is smooth and firm but lacks fizz. Still, go ahead and pick one to enjoy on a nice crisp fall day.

Had this at a barbq last night. Tasted like yeasty apples, slightest hint of cider, and the aftertaste is like apple pie...all the usual suspect spices there. Consistency was like water, though. Even the aroma out of the bottle is reminiscent of apple pie. An interesting variation on a theme, but I think more could have been done with this. Overall, another adequate beer from Shipyard.

pours a yellow-gold color with some head, some lacing, but nothing really special. The aroma is like a bowl of Apple Jacks! This aroma is phenomenal. The cues of apple and cinnamon are so profound I can literally taste them. The taste could have more of the Apple Jacks taste, but it tastes very good overall. Beautiful apple and cinnamon clashing with some honey taste, maybe a little bit of bitter hops and a sweet golden malt. Very pleasant. The mouthfeel is a little disappointing, as its generic with a watery feeling. Overall a very good beer indeed, and made for one unique and very tasty beverage. Definitely a must try!

Ok...so this tastes like cider. So what? It's beer. It's brewed by Shipyard. So what? It's good in the summer! Nothing to rave about, but for $6 a 6-pack at Shipyard Brewpub in Winter Park, FL...I'll take it. Was hesitant at first, but it actually works for me. The initial sip or two of each sample is slightly strange, but grows on me towards the end. A little too much cinnamon, but does not mess with the balance. Probably will not rush out to get again. Worth the sample though.

Thank, Lou - could have been a "Jolly Rancher in a Bottle", but just didn't quite make it. The aroma was faint, but decidely applescent - same with flavor. Light clove and apple spice - a tribute to pie, I suppose. Not bad, just not great.

Sampled on 3/30/2012. This spiced ale pours a medium to light orange gold color from a 12oz bottle. Medium sized white foamy head. The aroma is spices, apples and cereal, like an apple pie. A light to medium bodied spiced ale. The malts are fruity and sweet, cereal and grainy. The hops are herbal and spicy. Decent carbonation. It tastes like a slice of apple pie. A touch on the thin tasting side and there is some carbonation (Club soda like) fizzyness. Much better than I was expecting. Touch of cinnamon at the finish. Mouthfeel is a touch thin. The finish is clean and crisp. The aftertaste is slightly spicy and a touch sweet.

Clear light golden amber pour, decent white head and some lacing. Weak apple aroma, some cinnamon, wet malts, very light hops. Taste is watered down apples, some cinnamon, light lager. Refreshing but a bit watery. Good hand out beer at a summer party.

12oz bottle -
Found out that Trader Joe's carries 6-packs of this and a few other unusual Shipyard beers. This one works really, really well and quite a tasty spring/summer beer. An aroma that can best be described as smelling like McDonalds hot apple-pie snacks is the best I can come up with. It smells really nice. Flavor is a nice blend of apples, light cinnamon with a touch of tannic pucker-ness. A pretty straight-forward fruit beer, with a strong flavor of apples. No noticeable flaws while at proper temps. A really nice beer. -

This is apple pie in a beer and it works. Aroma is apple and apple pie spices. The tasting even more so. A bright orange colored beer with a big frothy textured, white head. Settles fairly quickly leaving no lacing. Light bodied

got a single just to see. if this type of beer is what you're in the mood for, it's actually quite good. if you're not in the mood, still an ok beer. better than pumpkinhead. the mix of apple aroma and flavor, and spices cover up any shortcomings in this too light wheat beer. looks and has the feel of typical micro/macro hybrid...but the aroma and flavor are nice enough to almost win me over. not a high scorer, but one i may get again if singles are available.
