Very robust, with hints of raisins and licorice, this vintage dated black ale will improve in the cellar for several years.

The beer pours a viscous dark black into the tulip, capped by a full inch of a creamy dark brown head. Notes of roasted malt, molasses, coffee, plums, and licorice fill the air while the same notes tickle the taste buds a few moments later. Just a great beer.

Scavanged from a trade, this sample has been racked for 3 years: Poured jet black with a creamy mocha colored cap that lasts and laces well. Roch chocolate and wet hay aroma. Thick silky mouth feel. Flavour is decadent dark roasted cocoa and figs with a wonderful pervasive resinous hop bittering in the back. Long rich wet finish with lingering cocoa after tastes. BLOODY MARVELOUS STUFF!

courtesy of Oakes; 2005 vintage - pours an impressive pitch black colour under a big creamy, brown tainted head; roasted mocha aroma and some metallic notes; the palate begins thick and oily but finishes surprisingly thin; increasing bitterness in the aftertaste where tones of milk coffee barely hide more metallic notes - not fully convincing

Poured an opaque black color with a small, tan head that left light lacing on the glass. Aroma of nuts, roast malt, chocolate, smoked and dried fruits. Taste began smokey, but yielded sour cherries, faint chocolate, roast, but also acidic and thin.

Perry strikes again. As per usual. First bottle courtesy of Doug Shoemaker from Tronto. Since then, I have had this a few times, and have half a case now. Opaque black pour, with a thin mocha ring that sits atop. Superb aromas of anise and roasted espresso beans. Dark rum, and plums. Sweet coffee bean flavours, accompanied by dark chocolate, licorice, rum, and bitters. Oily, silky, warming, boozey, complex. Silky smooth finish, with great impy lingering attributes! Perry, well done!

A great thanks and congrads to Perry for a beer extremely well done. I can't overstate how well crafted this beer is. Poured the darkest of black I ever remember seeing, the little head which formed was a deep, dark rustic colour. Very well carbonated and immensely smooth. Flavours are all present and finely blended. Alcohol concealed beyond recognition. Texture is immaculate. This beer has found equilibrium. Near flawless and extremely enjoyable. I intended to age these, but there is no need and furthermore, I doubt I'll have the discipline. Excellence, simply excellent.

Celebrating my 500th review with Clash (on BP Chat... very early in the morning). Thanks to Perry, the owner of Scotch Irish Brewing, for these free tester ones. Pours a pitch black oil-like colour (and texture). The bubbly brown head has medium retention and the lacing is good. Aromas of coffee, dark bitter chocolate, roasted malt, mild candy and no sign of alcohol (great for a 9% ABV). Smooth silky mouthfeel, almost syrupy. The taste is bitter in the middle and comes back in the aftertaste. The beginning and finish is quite smooth. Good rich molasses and coffee with notes of licorice. The two other bottles he gave me are going to the cellar. Cheers Perry !

Bottle: Poured a thick black color stout with a medium creamy dark brown head with good retention. Aroma has lots of rich sweet chocolate with hints of alcohol and coffee. Taste is a well balance mix between medium sweet dark chocolate with subtle coffee note in the background with some figs/dry raisins also noticeable. Bitter hops are discernable at the end but they are well balance and not overpowering which made me enjoy this beer even more. Body has a creamy texture and is quite full and alcohol is well hidden. Wow! I knew this was a good brewer but to be honest I never expected something so good.
