Our Sgt. Major's IPA is our most intense ale to date. It's a massively hoppy and quite bitter beer, yet one with a nice, full-bodied malt background. The full body of our India Pale Ale comes from lots of English pale ale malt and crystal malt, with a very small amount of chocolate malt.

I tried this beer on May 26, 2008 at "Smokeless Joe's" in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The beer poured a translucent reddish-brown colour with a thin white head, that was bubbly. The aroma was malty with some caramel and spicy hints, with a slight hoppy hint. The mouthfeel was medium bodied with medium carbonationn, and a dry bitter finish. The flavour was full of citrusy and grapefruity hoppiness, with a little malty tinge. A very good beer, although I would have liked more of a hoppy aroma.

Fifteen years ago this was a highly sought after IPA in Ontario. Every time it was at the LCBO, it would sell out in short order. It pours a clear rust colour into the glass with good effervescence and a creamy light brown cap. Aroma was very piney and citrusy with some caramel malt and yeast thrown in to make it more beer-like. The flavour had a grapefruit zing on top of caramel feel, yet definitely balanced.

Very attractive beer--cloudy reddish gold with a huge creamy tan head that left behind a ton of beautiful lacing! Definite spicy, citrusy-fruity aroma. Smells and tastes like there is a lot happening here. The bitter bite took me some getting used to, but the quality of this beer really comes through. Like having a hand-made butter croissant vs. a Pillsbury crescent roll! And love the stubby brown bottle!!!

This beer is a dark brown beer with reddish hues. When held to the light, it is clear. The head is thin, tan in colour, and lasts a while. The aroma is caramel malt, and citrusy hops, and spices. The flavour is some malt up front, and grapefruity hops in back. A dry bitter finish.

Big Thanks to Pootz for the 341 ml stubby bottle, from a recent trade. Red label with a 'red coat' staring back at you - very old school to match the bottle. Poured into my pint glass. The beer is slightly hazy with a few tiny suspended chunks. Nice looking deep orange color, with a short white head. Foam does shrink and the thin lace disappears quickly. A hoppy aroma with grapefruit and grass. A nicely balanced flavor of malt strength and hoppiness. Lots of citrus and grapefruit bite. Slightly herbal, resin bitterness in the aftertaste. Full flavored, medium mouthfeel keep it refreshing. A well built beer - this is what an IPA should be.

not a bad beer. love the aroma, but found it kinda average. don't get me wrong i've had worse, but i've had better too. drinkable, and certainly a sessioner. i found the mouthfeel a tad better out of the bottle than out of the glass, but mind you the only ale glass i have is a leffe glass, so...

Had this in Ottawa in the Glebe. Took me back to my time in Great Britain. Nice dark amber colour with a tiny bit of head. The attack with very full bodied with alot of bite. Very much a true IPA.

I was listening Ryan Adams and the Cardinals when i opened that marvellous nectar.Poured a gold orange, very decent head and patchy lacing all over.Subtle hopps and malt aroma, nothing overdone, like a very good IPA,that's hoppy taste territory and that remain very bitter at the end...But don't panic, that beer is also well balance, the malt base giving the fruity notes is well structure;strong enough to receive aplenty of hops...Sgt major i'm ready to join the army if you nourish me everyday with that nectar...

07.10.05 Bottle, RBSG. Honey amber, creamy white head laces in spots. More tea, some floral, dry; all hops in flavor. Long bitter finish. Nice session beer that may have been wasted on a slightly spent palate.

It’s an attractive beer, with a clear medium amber (almost copper body) topped by a dense, thick soapy head. The aroma is actually more malt than hops in my sample, and the malt carries a distinct resemblance to saltine crackers. There’s a bit of Christmas tree needles from the hops. The flavor is more of that cracker malt mixed with a bitterness that doesn’t seem to meld with the malt very well. The beer seems a bit out of whack to me. The hops are definitely in the IPA range for the bitterness, but seem to be lacking in hop aroma and flavor other than bitterness.
