August Schell Hefe Weizen is an authentic Bavarian style wheat beer produced seasonally in May and June. We first brewed our Weizen in 1985 as a Kristal or clear wheat beer. In 2001 we decided to re-introduce it as an unfiltered Hefe Weizen. This unique beer gets its character from the high percentage of malted wheat we brew with and the special top fermenting German Weizen yeast we ferment with. A slight citric tang and a faint clove aroma gives this unfiltered weizen beer a gold medal taste. A perfect summer beverage with or without a slice of lemon.

Pours a clear straw yellow with a one finger white head that lofts a while. heavily carbonated. Aroma is grainy with a hint of lemon. Hints of banana as well. Taste is light on the body and heavy on the cloves and banana. Sticky ending with a hint of malt. Actually quite tasty. Not overly filling.

Bottle (label as pictured), sampled at the brewery tour and from a mixed case after. Slightly hazy, yellow gold color, almost shiny hilights. Lots of big bubbles, thin sticky lace, fine streams of carbonation. Decent hefe-type aroma, slightly wheaty, a touch of banana and clove. A bit of lemon citrus too. Sweet wheat malt and some yeasty flavors, banana taste is quite light. The body and mouthfeel is light, but still enough bite to give it a crisp and clean finish. I thought it was a good interpretation of the style.

Poured a partially cloudy golden colour with a small, barely noticeable white head. Aroma is rather lifeless, faint banana with subtle hints of citrus fruit. Taste is soft, light and not too wheaty with sporatic notes of spice.

My bottle said Hefe Weizen on it, like the picture. I’ve waited a while to taste this, ever since I was introduced to Schell, I have enjoyed their beers. Gunk on bottom of bottle, lots. Beautiful swirling unfiltered wheat beer pour. Nice wheat beer aroma, very attractive. Very light pale yellow orange haze and a small surrounding thin white girdle for a head. Fun and nice immediate palate, bubbly fresh and hefey! Spicy and delicious, spices do not overwhelm. Very good hefe experience. There is a developing attempt to be bitter, but the manners of this brew never lets it get there. No bitter aftertaste on the finish. Just what I expect from schell, quality beer. Not disappointed. Much better than troeg’s dream weaver. Almost as good as Erdinger Weissbier (Hefe-Weizen)!

This is a hefeweizen, shells does not make just a weizen. Very good beer for this type. Has a hint of banana to it with a perfect hint of spice to acomidate it.

First of all, let me say that I hope that I am reviewing the right beer, since no one else has written about this. What I had was the Schell hefeweizen, I hope they don't make another weizen beer. One of the better bottled hefeweizens Sudsman has had. Pours with a golden to downright yellow color, low clarity, and a sparse head. Flavor is nice. Clove, nutmeg and banana overtones, the hallmark of a real hefeweizen, are right their where they are supposed to be – my experience is that these are usually much more present more in draft hefeweizens than bottled. This one’s got ‘em, big time. Medium to slightly heavy bodied, nice mouthfeel – good stuff.
