Often called “mild” if it is on draft, brown ale is a walnut-colored specialty of the North of England. A festive-occasion beer, brown ale is one of the oldest English brewing styles, mentioned in literature in the 16th century. Beers brewed at the old brewery have a round, nutty flavor because of the Yorkshire square system of fermentation. Walnut-like color and palate of hazelnuts. Wonderful balance of roasted crystal malt and aromatic hops. Long clean finish. Stilton cheese, grouse and roasted game hen, barbecued duck, pepper steak; spicy food, paella, stir-fry, teriyaki, Thai food, Chinese food, creamy chicken and pineapple curry. Serve at 55 degrees. Gold Medal and "Top-Rated English Brown Ale" —World Beer Championships, 2004

The beer poured a beautiful translucent reddish-brown colour with a huge rocky head that slowly dissipated. The aroma was caramel malt, and some hops. The mouthfeel was full-bodied, slightly creamy, and slightly bitter. The flavour was similar to dark, powdered cocoa, with a little hoppishness.

The beer pours a clear dark brown color with a weak tan colored head. Aroma is light caramel, nutty malt, and yeast. Flavor is the same with hints of light citrus. Finish is not very bitter for a British ale.

This is the granddaddy of all brown ales. It pours a dark brown, is clear, and is topped by a whitish fluffy head that lasts a while. The aroma is nuts, caramel, bread, yeast, and earthy hops. Mouthfeel is average to full. Flavor has notes of chocolate it in, along with the nuts and caramel. The finish is mildly hoppy. Perfectly British.

Very nice Brown ale that I received for Christmas 2014 in a Sam Smiths gift pack. I was pleasantly surprised by this beer. Very drinkable, and delicious beer. Nice brown clear beer, long lasting head, right to the bottom of the glass. Very nice medium bodied, balanced beer.

Pours rich copper color with a light tan 1" head, decent retention. Caramel and malty smell with some nuttiness. Caramel and malts are tasted first with a nutty dry finish. Medium body with a slight bitterness. Lively amount of carbonation. Overall, great brown ale that I would drink again.

Dark ruby color with light brown foam head, lacing to glass. Sweet nutty smell (surprise) but also hop. Sweet nutty taste although some bitterness too. (Houston 201205)

Pours a crystal clear dark reddish brown in color with some light amounts of visible carbonation, with a nice tall light beige head that reduces to a thin layer over the entire surface with moderate lacing. The aroma is malts (caramel and bready), nuts, and just a hint of bitterness. The taste is a lot of maltiness - dark and bready - along with some very nice nut flavors.

This is one of the first breweries I got into when starting to drink craft. For some reason, I missed this review. Maybe I was waiting until I got this again to review fresh. Anyways, been about 2-3 years since I had this, but recall it to be one of my favorite brown ales. On the thicker side for the style. Semi-creamy texture. Medium-brown appearance. Nutty flavors balanced very well with the malts/hop combo. Now that I am reading the other reviews, going to go this direction next time I go brown...not so much to get a refresher to my memory, but mainly because this is one of the best browns around.

Had this one at a sampling at Ridgeview liquor and had I not already made my purchase I would have bought a four pack of these. What a really enjoyed about this was the mellow carmel flavor that was rich and yet not too sweet. I think this one would be great to put in a brandy snifter and have as an after dinner dessert by a nice warm fire.

A rather nice not too anything brew. Not two sweet, not to bitter, not too toasted, not too much head, no too thin or too thick. Found in most grocery stores and is a nice treat every once in a while.
