Sam Adams is introducing a small batch series of ales, starting with the above – Tasman Red. The series will feature limited edition brews, presumably from experimental batches, and previously draft only brews. This wily red IPA gets its character from the Tasmanian hops that are full of grapefruit, pine, and earthy notes creating a bold flavor that threads throughout the taste. The hops are balanced by a core of roasty malts that give this brew body and richness with hints of toffee. This flavorful brew is rounded and smooth with a dry citrusy hop finish. At Sam Adams we love experimenting. This series of limited edition brews represents some of our favorite small batch creations. Batch No. 1 Style: IPA Hops: Topaz, Galaxy. Imported from Tasmania. Malts: Two-Row Harrington, Metcalfe, Copeland Pale, Special B, Caramel 60, Roasted Dehusked malt Availability: 22oz bombers, Draft 6.5% ABV

From Haggen (Burlington, WA) in a bomber. Big, fluffy tan head with mega lacing over a pour of clear, dark copper. Well-balanced aroma of hops, malt, and pine resin. Odd flavour, lots of malt yet not sweet. Bitter finish. Okay mouthfeel. Above average but I don't know exactly why. Not the best price, either.

12oz bottle -
I've had the pleasure of enjoying a few well made single hop pale ale's from a local brewery, that have used the Topaz and Galaxy hop before, so I'm semi-familiar with it and it reminds me in many ways of a Cascade hop (which isn't a bad thing).
Aroma seemed bursting with hop elements like citrus and pine, but I found some subtle notes of wood and tropical fruits around mid-glass, which I don't find in Cascade. The malts find a surprisingly loud voice in this beer with lots of sweet bread and caramel with a nice balancing touch with a spicy/citrusy hop punch. If they started making this available in 6 packs, I'd be a happy camper. -

12 oz bottle. Pours a dark reddish amber with a medium frothy off-white head that retains well and laces the glass.
The aroma is a bit subdued - some piney resiny hops and some fruit and roasty caramel/toffee malts.
The flavor is a bit odd - leathery sweet caramel/toffee malts with metallic resiny hops. The mouthfeel is light bodied and pretty watery.
Overall, rather strange with some off notes. -

Dark amber color with a beige head. The aroma contains some caramel and nutmeg along with some pine and citrus. The flavor is rather bitter with some oranges and lemons showing up. The malty side of it contains some chocolate and caramel. The finish is quite bitter. Overall this a pretty good um "Imperial Red"

Ok. The new premium beers from Sammy are good, yeah...but twice the price..Really? A little stronger than their standard 5.0+ %, but maybe bottle this in 4-packs or something or just ask $10 or so a 6-pack? This was my 2nd new bigboy, and each one thought the same. Maybe it's just that I like lots of the Sammy's regular collection as my "bread-and-butter" economy beers....so to pay double I'd rather go with Lagunitas, Stone, or something different. So back to this brew....typical redish ale-IPA hybrid. Not as smooth as some others comparable to this. Flavor a combo of sweet/malty and bitter hop, but lacking the fullness that I expect from this style. Still a good beer, just was hoping for a bit more.

Batch No. 2, pours a rich amber with a huge light tan head and thick lacing. Malty and a touch sticky, but not too bitter. A jumbled account of some catty hops and a grassy floral quality offset by lightly roasted malts with hints of toast, toffee and a weird earthiness. Odd brew indeed.

An interesting ipa, the aroma and flavor have an almost malt vinwgar quality to it. The hops are citrus, pine, grapefruit, malts are sweet toffee with a burnt characteristics to it. finish is bittter with a bit of stickiness.

Aroma is hoppy and - hoppy. Not strong, but hoppy with a little evergreen, definitely an IPA. It pours a clear, dark mahogany/coppery brown with a fairly thick and persistent light tan head that leaves some good lacing. Hoppy flavor has evergreen, caramel and woody notes plus a hint of miso. Smooth texture has about average body and average fizziness. Overall, though not notable, still worthy of at least a try.

Pours a reddish brown with a monsterous head. Aroma is nice and hoppy. Mouthfeel is norm of a good red. Taste is very hoppy with a slight dry metallic aftertaste. Overall a nice beer.

Black ipa's and red ipa's, why doesn't someone get real creative and turn one purple?! This is actually a really well rounded Ipa but the color thing just seems kinda gimmicky.
