Gratefully dedicated to the Rogue in each of us. In the early 1990s Dead Guy Ale was created as a private tap sticker to celebrate the Mayan Day of the Dead (November 1st, All Souls Day) for Casa U Betcha in Portland, Oregon. The Dead Guy design proved popular and was incorporated into a bottled product a few years later with Maierbock as the elixir. Strangely, the association with the Grateful Dead is pure coincidence. Dead Guy is a German-style Maibock made with Rogue's proprietary "PacMan" ale yeast. It is deep honey in color with a malty aroma, rich hearty flavor and a well balanced finish. Dead Guy is created from Northwest Harrington, Klages, Maier Munich and Carastan malts, along with Perle and Saaz Hops. Dead Guy Ale is available in 22-ounce bottles, 12-ounce 6-pack, and on draft. Measurements: 16 degrees Plato, IBU 40, Apparent Attenuation 78, Lovibond 16

I tried this beer from a bottle that I purchased at macadoodles liquor store in Jane, MO. I'm not sure it was the freshest bottle. Anyway it was very flavorful. Color was a nice clear dark copper orange. It was a bit hoppy. The bitterness really builds drink after drink.

Bottle. Great label. Colour – metallic gold, slight haze, white cap, very little lacing. Aroma – grains, light caramel, weak hops, weak spices, some yeast. Mouthfeel – medium bodied, well carbonated. Flavour – grainy, some sweet caramel, and a nice bitter hop finish.

12 oz undated bottle served in a pint glass. A little sediment at bottom of bottle ... added mid-tasting. Clear, then cloudy light amber color; 1 finger of creamy head after a light pour has good retention. Aroma is mainly citrus hops and some floral and apricot elements.

Pours out a dark gold with a orange tine with just a wisp of white head. The aroma is nice and of mild malt. The mouthfeel is rich and border line thick. The taste is of balanced malt.

Had a pint at Pub Italia. Arrived with very minimal head, and leaves a thin ring around inside glass. Has a dark amber colour appearance. Weak lacing. Aromas are mostly of roasted malts and a bit of yeast. Flavours are also of the roasted malt variety, with spices and hops readily apparent. Hints of caramel. Has a good balance of hops and malts actually. Mildly bitter aftertaste but not offensive. Average carbonation. Warming mouthfeel. Pretty good and lucky to try on tap. Held its flavour with the spicy italian sausage pasta I had with it.

I have never understood the hype for this beer. I had it when I first got into craft beer and tried it again recently--it still doesn't do anything for me. Mostly malty but with an underlying earthiness that doesn't sit well with me (perhaps the yeast?).

Picked up a growler at the grocery because there was nothing local I wanted to try, and I hadn't reviewed this yet. Beautiful copper red and just a wee cloudy. Aroma's big notes are soy sauce and caramel with hints of bean sprouts, cherry, and apricot. The immediate flavor matches the with a little soy sauce, caramel, wheat toast, and tart apricot. While cool, this ale has good balance, pleasantly bittersweet. Malty with a bit of lemon and raisin surfacing later. The only negative note is slightly metallic. As it warms, of course, it gets much sweeter. Light carbonation but heavy and sticky. If I were going to pair it with food, I might like to try something light and Japanese.

pours a orange-amber with no head. The aroma is of sweet carmelized sugars and toasted grains. Hint of caramel and apricot. The taste is of toasted grains, tart pitted fruits, candy booze, and light maple. Citrusy hop character with a dates-like malt. The mouth feel is light carbonation with a slick body.

Light amber with off white foam that settles nicely. Great beer smell and nice bitter hops taste. Some caramel but not too much. Nice bitter lasting taste in mouth, dry. (Galveston 201205)

Pours a nice copper color, fairly heavy body, thus not a great thirst quencher! A little sweet, big malty flavor, would be nice on a nice winter night by the fire and a guy movie (lots of explosions)

Nothing offensive about this craft beer. Not worth the money, though. It's a real middle-of-the-road craft beer. Like it's Rogue's signature beer. It would make a great session beer if the price were lower. Had this numerous times over the years in the half-gallon jug as well as the 6-pack 12 ounce bottles. It's a solid craft beer. The price is a little too high. Sadly I don't enjoy much of Rogue's wonky lineup. This is like the only beer they have that has a decent taste. They're too experimental, and if this is the only beer I like from them, and find it overpriced, my overall message is, look elsewhere for similar stuff at a lower price. Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, Samuel Adams, Redhook ESB... all cheaper and just as good. Rogue is just a tad too off-the-wall, and their prices don't justify their means. Easily the most dissapointing craft brewery I have ever experienced. They have so much potential, but take things too far in the wrong directions. Recommended once. Not recommended as a regular beer due to the price. Can't recommend any of their other beers.
