The name is taken from the beer's strength at 4.9% but also evokes its golden colour. Ringwood has been brewing Fortyniner since 1978 and is our second most popular beer. It is a golden full-bodied malty beer with a deep bitter-sweet finish. Brewed with floor-malted Maris Otter barley, Goldings, Progress, Fuggles and Challenger hops. In 2004 the decision was made to create an identity for the beer and to focus on its colour and abv with a view to attracting new and younger drinkers. The 3-stage promotional campaign started with 'Get the Rush' - to focus on the gold rush of 1849 - and then carried on with Gold Fever and Gold Rush and was a hit with consumers.

Pours a thick creamy frothy off-white head and has a fairly dark amber appearance. Nice thick dirty lacing. Aromas of barley malts, light hops. Flavours are mostly sweet malts, barley, with some notes of toffee and hint of caramel. Good retention. Average carbonation. Mouthfeel has a very subtle bitterness to it. Flavourful mix for a lighter ale. Pretty good stuff.

Part of the Classic Ales 6-pack at the LCBO for Christmas 2014. Pours a slightly hazy golden-amber colour with a nice bubbly-creamy off-white head, giving some dirty lace. Caramel nose, almost like diacetyl, with some apple notes. The taste is a mix of the apples, grassy hops and mild caramel... saving this one.

Part of a 6 pack of Marston PLC beers. Pours a golden-red colour with a thin off-white coloured head. The aroma is light caramel, weak floral hops, and grass. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with average carbonation. The flavour is bitter hops, grains, and a weak fruit tone. Not a bad beer at all. -

500 ml capped bottle. Poured a slight hazy dark amber-chesnut coloured ale with a generous one finger beige creamy head that had a long retention and tons of micro bubbles. Moderate carbonation. Poor lacing. The aroma is moderate roasted malts, honey and herbal hops. The flavour is caramel malts, a lot of fresh grass, fruity, oranges, mandarin, herbal hops. The mouthfeel is creamy and fulled. This light to medium bodied ale has a dry fruity and hoppy bitter finish. A nice drinking ale.

Cask. Orangeish golden colour with mediumsized white creamy head, that leaves nice lace. Aroma is fruits, sweet malts as well as some mild grassy and nectary notes. Flavour is fruity and flowery hops along with some hints of grass. An OK brew.

Cask at The Hogshead, Ipswich. My first Ringwood beer. Deep golden colour, light bodied, fruity flavour with a faint hint of barnyard. OKish, but not a favourite of mine.

This headless ale has a deep amber colour, wine mouthfeel with a slight hint of malt. The finish is distinct and the main tone is hops bitterness. I wonder why it’s considered to be a strong ale having just 5% abv. I’ve had another idea of strong beer.
