Like the original India Pale Ales, which were first brewed for travel from England to the Indian colonies (but somehow, after years of aimless wandering, got diverted from there and ended up in the New World, where they filled out considerably and eventually grew to become the defining style of the American craft beer revolution), this Ridgeway I.P.A. has come to us in a very round-about way. As you might expect, it is hardy and a bit rough around the edges, but at its core is well-traveled, literate, and highly sophisticated – the model for the next wave of real I.P.A.’s from the United Kingdom.

Nice amber colored pour with a large one inch plus head. Left good webby laceing. Fresh hops that smell more american than english. Not really grapefruit, but a citrus base. Malt is toasted but the scent comes through.Very relaxed and laid back. Citrus and tea leaf hops mix well with the lightly toasted malt base. About an even mix of hops and malts. Medium to lower crisp carbonation level. Short lasting, but pleasant hoppy aftertaste. All in all a very nice english ipa.

It pours a light and hazy golden with half-inch thick white head and fairly copious lacing. An aroma of caramel malts, hops, bile, oranges, grassiness, and light spices. The mouthfeel is smooth and rich. Flavors of caramel malts, hops, bile, oranges, grasses, pine, and spices. Not bad, but rather strange tasting.

Pours an orange color with a thin to medium sized off-white head that fades leaving a small film. The aroma is a little strange: lemons, citrus, banana, vanilla and some pine sol. I get a weak resin hoppy flavor, some pine, sweet sugary malts, and a yeasty lemony citrus taste. There's hardly any bitterness to this at all and what's there I'd classify as a very mild spice. This isn't undrinkable but it's not good either and the import price means this one will probably not be re-visited.

Bottled. Pours out in a slightly hazy bronze colour with a rich fluffy white foam. Hoppy and a bit skunky and unclean aroma with notes of metal. hay, rye-bread and yellow fruits. Medium-bodied with notes of rye-bread, metal, nuts and dried apricots. Medium-bitter finish of grains, metal, rye-bread with unclean fruity undertones of apricots. Almost decent.

Pale yellow colour, not much head. Aroma was an interesting mix of American and British hops (or atleast comparable to that!). Smooth flavour of hops, flowers and hay with slight citrus notes.

Bottle, at Plain Kitchen, Göteborg. Bottle conditioned. Golden colour, moderate head. Hoppy aroma with notes of resin and honey. Hoppy flavour, notes of resin and grapefruit. Good beer.

The nose has a bit of lemon with a wonderful sourdough and floral notes to it. Where this are hints of herbal qualities I get more sweet apple and pear on the mid palate and a nice sour yeast finish which really helps balance it out, great with cheese and lighter fare.

10.29.05 500ml bottle, best by 05.18.06 Deep golden pour under a tall and lively white head of big, sudsy bubbles. Thick lacing. Nice aroma full of citrus, bright flowers, tall grass, yeasty bread dough, and some mineral. Flavor is also dough and sour yeast, a bit chalky, biting hops are a bit lemony and a bit sprucy, too biting without enough body to support it. Light herbal qualities. Finishes blah, but tangy. I can’t decide if I like it or not, so I guess not.

Medium gold body. The aroma is lemon scented dishsoap and some oranges. There is also a very faint hint of pine. The taste is rich with some old oranges. There is also a little bit of bread sruct and some sweet caramel. Well balanced and scary drinkable. If not for the price, I would drink a lot of this.
