In 1982 Redhook was born in a converted transmission shop in the Ballard neighborhood of Seattle, WA. After 28 years of brewing, Redhook is paying homage to its roots by releasing Big Ballard Imperial IPA. Big Ballard has a rich, deep golden and a very assertive hop character that hits you in the nose before reaching your lips. The flavor and aroma are balanced with complex malty undertones. While it has a friendly side, make no mistake - Big Ballard is brewed for diehard IPA fans. Big Ballard pairs well with sausage, cured meats with ground mustard, spicy Mexican or Asian dishes, and barbeque. Available in the Western US year round in both 22-ounce bottles and on draught.

    22oz bottle -

This wasn't a bad beer in the normal sense of the word, but rather just a bad DIPA. The hops were burried under an avalanche of malts, but what hops squeaked out of the aroma was something close to citrusy/orange juice like hops. But the main focus in the aroma seemed to be on the sweet malts. Flavor was the same way. An overabundance of sweet syrupy malts with just a twinge of bitter orange-y hops in the flavor. Seemed also like a small barleywine. Not horrible, but not a good DIPA either.

On tap at Portsmouth. Pour was orangey amber, a thin head but nice lacing. Aroma was floral was sweet fruit. The flavor was syrupy fruits, pear and orange, with a faint floral edge. Very little bitterness to balance the sweetness and almost tastes like an IPA past its prime (but obviously not given where I had it). Watery and thin. It’s a typical Redhook effort...a weak and mediocre example of the style, but no off flavors or obvious defects.

I was kind of apprehensive about this one to start off but it turned out o.k. Aromas of citrus and sweet malts rather nice. Deep reddish orange body with a decent head and lace. Flavor of grapefruit and orange, o.k. maltiness. Overall it wasnt as big as a regular double ipa but good enough.

Sampled on 10/16/2010. Bottled on 5/6/10. This Imperial IPA pours a medium, orange gold color from a 22oz bottle. Medium to large sized white foamy head. The aroma is orange, fruity, sweet and citrusy. A medium bodied Imperial IPA. The malts are fruity and sweet. With lots of orange and citrus. The hops are citrusy and grapefruity with a touch herbal. Good balance. Medium bitterness. A little bit of residual sweetness. Mouthfeel is full. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.

This was my first "big" Redhook brew. Nothing terribly special here. Pour is amber/copper with a creamy white head. Aroma isn't very strong--some grapefruit and floral hops is about it. Taste is surprisingly bitter considering the weak aroma with plenty of grapefruit rind and floral hops showing thru again.
