Ommegang Bière de Mars is a Belgian-style amber ale with a bit of magical space dust woven in - Brettanomyces bruxellensis, a wild-yeast used in the secondary fermentation. The Brett imparts added tartness, a bit of zing and some farmhouse funkiness. Also dry-hopped, this new ale continues our exploration of using Brett for secondary fermentation in limited-release beers. Bière de Mars reveals a copper-amber body and a frothy white head that builds, clings and stays. Aromas are of malt and grain, clove, fruit and a bit of funk. Flavors are full-bodied with delicate malty sweetness, followed by spicy, peppery yeastiness and Brett-induced funk. Hopping is subtly bitter and aromatic, bumped up a bit by dry-hopping. The finish is dry and gently lingering. At 6.5% ABV, Bière de Mars offers easy quaffing; it also pairs nicely with spicy foods such as barbecue.

Pours out a hazy amber orange color with a decent sized head that lingers. Aroma is citrus and wheat. Taste is a balance between the citrus notes and wheat. Overall though, this one just was not for me.

Bottle from SL. Pour was full amber-orange with some haze, large generous head, good lacing all the way down. The aroma was fruity (apples at the fore?), some funk. The flavor followed, apples, other fruits, some funk, but some astringency to this, not nearly as clean as I’d have expected, and there was an acidity to this that wasn’t pleasing. Another recent Ommegang release that didn’t live up to my hopes, way many other BdG/BdM brews superior out there.

So very chunky!!! So very chunky!!! So very chunky!!!! Massive chunks of sludge just plopped in the glass making the brew a muddy tan color, the cap is huge and the heavy carbonation make this a very difficult brew to pour. The aroma is carbonation and yes carbonation has a smell, apple, mild wood, egg maybe and some funky sour rubber boot. Taste is a lot of the same with yeast and ginger added. The brew reminds of a less intense Unibrou but ad some funk and sour from a Gueze. Ok brew I guess but I was slightly let down.

A hazy orange colored ale. The white, foamy head is big. But not much hang time time. Limps away a very thin ringlet. Bold aromas of yeast and sour apples rise up. The body is light, high carbonation and a crispness that makes it a drinkable quaff. Fruits, yeast and sweet malt all swirl around the taste buds. I’ve only has two of this genre, so unfair to draw comparisons.

Sampled on 7/1/2009. This Biere de Garde pours a medium orange gold color from a 750mle cork and caged bottle. Large sized white foamy head with nice retention and good lacing. The aroma is orange, fruity, sweet, spicy with some brett. A medium bodied Biere de Garde. The malts are fruity and sweet, with lots of orange and peach flavors. The hops are earthy and floral. Nice balance. Good carbonation. A touch of brett, mostly in the dryness of the finish. The beer starts very sweet and finishes very dry. A great summer night on the porch beer. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is smooth and dry. The aftertaste is slightly sweet.

Perhaps it was me but I did not detect much nose in this beer. A deep copper body was topped with a lovely tight off-white head with decent lacing. Mouth was medium to full bodied with good carbonation. Flavor was interesting. Starts with a hint of sour reminding one of a good Belgian Farmhouse, then it starts tasting more like a brown ale, and at the taste's end the is a surprisingly strong hit of piney hops. The finish is remarkably dry. This would not be amongst my favorites but it is a very well made and interesting brew and fairly unique in my experience. It offers a fairly complex flavor profile and yet is quite approachable with a lower abv than one would expect. Really a nice job!

Batch #2, October 2008. Bright amber color, thick khaki head that fades too fast ending as a thin patchy layer. Aroma shows an assortment of fruits; pears, cherries, apples, with spices and yeast. Flavors are light and fruity, same fruits from aroma are tasted with a spicy bite and sour barnyard funk towards the back end. Some candied dried fruit sweetness here too which I’m not sure I really like. Overall good but not great.

Poured a nice hazy orange color with good head and great lacing. Aroma was lots of fruits, some funkiness in there hayish. Flavor was lots of apples and other light fruits, there was almost an acidity to it like apples gone past ripe. Not a great one.

the red planet .. . Pleasing aromas, from wet hay, honey, brett, light funk, and all that jazz .. . clean and crisp, fun yet reformed, pure and enjoyable .. clean as a1 whistle in the mouth, leaves just a touch of Brett, wonderful stuff! .. . lets fire up those stompers and make some dirty.. . . great spritz, a nice touch of bitterness, a bit of sweetness... well balanced!! .. . Way to easy to drink, light musk in the back of the throat every now and again .. . 'she does not have a phone, or a cellphone or a ..telegram ....' .. . A beginner brew for those who are getting into Brett, but still refined enough for the connoisseur !!
