A bold rich smoky nose is created naturally with a blend of smoked malts from Bamberg, Germany and Chilton, Wisconsin as well as robust Wisconsin Rye. Special Ale yeast ferments this hazy deep amber brew in the bottle. This is a big smoked beer fermented with Turbinado sugar and appropriate for sipping slowly today.

Sampled from bottle. Pours clear mahogany with a thin scattered head. Wonderful smokey, sweet and spicy aroma. The Bamburg smoked malt are just restrained enough to let the spicy rye to contribute to the flavor profile. Balanced, medium-full bodied and smooth. Excellent smoke beer. Thanks, Phishpond!

From heybeerman - thanks, I appreciate the trade.... the pour is phenomenal and the rich color and tight little head is a thing od beauty. The aroma was deep, harsh, peaty smoke that overpowered any other aroma that may have been present. The malts and slight caramel flavor overcome the smoke just a bit in the flavor, but the smoke still hangs heavy. I think more balance would serve this one well... still not a hateful beer at all.

Brought over and shared by a good friend during a homebrew session. The overly smoky aroma immediately caught my attention, but alas it wasn't as pronounced in the flavor. Dry and spicy rye are in effect. Great beer.

Another New Glarus beer from the Wisconsin Beer Mafia - this one from phishpond. Absolutely clear deep copper amber pour with a short-lived white head that reduces to a constant white ring leaving sporadic lacing. Smoky aroma, albeit a bit weak, with a slight sour and wet malts. Taste is the winner here; SMOKY, Bacon, very slight rye and then a touch of lightly toasted malts, then more smoke and smoked bacon. WOW! Big smoky flavor that surpasses the aroma and pleases the BBQ Man's palette. Thank you Travis for another winner for one of my favorite breweries. Mmmmmm Smoke.....

it seems that every smoke beer i try, that i like the style more and more- is it wrong i got aroused while drinkin this- never mind, never mind, forget i said that! .. . Pours a deep caramel, with medium head, and some pretty good sticky lacing .. . aroma is, amazing.. smoke, meat smoke, bbq, maple, more maple, syrup, and just a touch of booze .. . taste is really something, mirrors the nose and also has that touch of booze to it- the only thing that kills a perfect score- i could drink tons of this! i mean i could literally drink kegs and kegs of this, its really enjoyable, and so full of smokey goodness, i'd drown before i got my fill!! .. thanks to John for the trade, if i knew this was so good- i would have traded boxes of this!!! .. . in point: masterful!! .. .

Oh yeah, there's one more thing. That kid's name... that kid's name was Richard Nixon.

    Richard Millhouse Nixon?

What the hell's his middle name got to do with anything? Dave, the point of the story is... ahh let's see... hernia, wild animals, Nixon... hell, it's in there somewhere. I'm glad I could help you out.

I'm updating this review for the 3rd time, this is a tough beer to judge and I think a lot more complex than some other smoked beers. Unfortunately as a NG foil top beer I don't think this is as good as the other offerings. The initial smell and flavor are so medicinal that to call it "herbal" is being too nice. I would describe this as a slightly peroxide type flavor. This is a beautiful looking beer and it cetainly deserves high marks for that. The smoke that you do smell and taste is great and mysterious but is overpowered initially by that peroxide flavor, this dissipates the more you drink it, I think the more I drank the less I noticed it. I thought the peroxide was my imagination the first time based on everyone elses rave reviews but I've had this beer several times now and the peroxide is always there. If you stick with the beer and drink the whole bottle you start to notice how the smoke and caramel malt work together and that taste is quite wonderful but it's almost a battle in my mouth as to which flavor I notice more. A tough review for me, still not quite sure what I think of this beer.

On draught at the Malt House. Stellar Unplugged brew from NG, big suprise there.. Pours clear amber orange. HEad is finger sized. Aroma is fresh, dank and herbal. Taste is semi dry, clover like and chewy. Strong, big robust brew.
