Saluting our continued survival on this planet we decided to go all out with New Glarus Alt. This is a bold and racy toffee laced departure from the typical Dusseldorf style. Enjoy now or if you are the investment type lay it down. At twenty degrees Plato this might be more accurately termed a Triple Alt. The brilliant bronze body was cultivated in a three hour kettle boilof Caramel malts and Raw Turbinado Sugar. Aged on oak in open top fermenters followed by a second round of bottle conditioning. A firm head of foam sweeps brisk hop notes of Syrian Golding and German Hallertau to your nose. A defiant anomaly tenacious and independent this is a flavor experience to relish.

Lifeless copper pour with a fizzy head that ultimately vanishes. Rich and medium to full bodied with a firm smoothness. Deep caramel and brown sugar with a hearty addition of mixed berries and dried fruits. A bit of earthiness and a faint floral bouquet of sorts. Perhaps past it's prime, but still a nice sipper to enjoy on a snowy evening.

Maple syrup and alcohol heat .. brown .. muddled ..not an alt in any enjoyable sense .. i could barely choke this down .. disappointing ... Howdy, cowpokes. Uh, I know I shouldn't be interrupting in the middle of a song, but I got to tell you something. I know a lot of you out there really love this music, but I just don't get it. Explain it to me. And maybe it's 'cause I went to college, and I never drove a truck and had sex with my daddy's sister, but...I guess what I'm trying to say is, I...I don't think I'm the man for this job. So this is your old pal Hopalong Howie saying I quit. I... I think I quit.

Courtesty of pfoxyjohn. Pours a copper color with a quick fading fizzy head. Nothing left on top. Aroma is musty, notes of berries, caramel. Interesting beer. There’s an alcohol sting and flavors are spicy hops, sweet caramel and toffee, sugars, and some fruity aspects like apple and cranberry (at least that’s what I thought I tasted!). Sweet caramel malt shows again in the finish and aftertaste. Again, this is interesting. I only knew the alcohol was this high after a little research upon receiving the bottle. Hard to rate because this went from very good to not my thing and back and forth throughout the whole beer. Probably somewhere in between. Thanks John!

a little sweeter, and more flavor than just about any other alt i've had. definitely skewed towards the malty side, but they nailed the malt profile, and the turbanado sugar is a great finishing touch. Another NG beer at or near the top of the style, where it belongs!

Courtesy of pfoxyjohn. Full sudsy head atop a copper/orange colored body. Very sparse carbonation. Nevertheless, the mouthfeel is very full. Lots of caramel and light fruits, this was a bit sweeter than I was expecting. While, not exactly balanced, there is a bit of hops in there too. Aroma contains some orange zest. A delicious sampling. Thanks John!

Bottle from Bockyhorsey. Poured with a huge off-white colored, highly carbonated head over top of a copper body with some slight haze. The aroma was strong caramel and fruity notes with a touch of spicey notes (hops?). The flavor was strongly malty, but unfortunately overly sweet. The caramel, fruity esters (cherry especially), and sugary and spicey flavors ended up way too cloying for a style that demands much more balance, a firmer hop presence for sure (they were lost and gone). The bottle said there was some sugar added in there, and it literally made this taste quite Belgian-like, especially with dark fruit and spice notes mixed in there. A far cry from a true alt (yet from a brewer that normally nails German brews?), I would have guessed dark Belgian / dubbel if I was blind. Mouthfeel was sticky and highly (airy) carbonated. Many thanks to Bill for hooking me up with another bottle of my favorite style. Wished I could have raved about it much more, but it was a fun experience, nonetheless (and I'm clearly in the minority around here... but even on a hedonistic scale and factoring in that I like NG, I'm not digging it like I would have hoped).

Thanks to pfoxyjohn for this one. Pours a clear copper color with a small off-white head. Smells of sweet malts and a bit of caramel. I haven't had that many "Alt Beers" so I'm not really sure what they should taste like but this is quite nice.

poured a clear golden color with a thin head. Had a very mild flavor with a little floral hop presence. The flavor was predominately alcohol. Not very strong alcohol, but enough to overpower the malt presence that New Glarus was aiming for.

Thanks to pfoxyjohn for this Wisconsin Winner. Pours a slightly cloudy copper with a nice thick head that leaves beautiful lacing. Good carbonation. Aromas of sweet caramel malts, a hint of fruits, a slight sour acidic aroma and decent hops. Taste is spot-on for an Alt with the slight sweetness from malts, a nice hoppiness and some fruit presence. Another great beer from New Glarus and pfoxyjohn - Thanks!
