Bottle under the Boatswain Chocolate Stout moniker from Trader Joe’s in Newport News. Black pour with a short, fizzy tan head. Aroma is roasted malt, light cocoa and watery chocolate. Taste is roasted malt, toasted grains and light chocolate notes. Body is medium with a soft, prickly carbonation. Ends with more roasted malt and light chocolate.

Purchased under Boatswain Chocolate Stout at Trader Joe in Vegas. Pours a real dark brown colour with a frothy beige head, long lasting with creamy lacing. Chocolate malt aromas with the cacao added. Some stronger hops than usual for this style. Eventually, nutty notes comes out with mild coffee. Some sweetness flavours from the chocolate with roasted malts and light bitterness in the finish. This chocolate stout is a little too sweet, rich overall. Started with a lot of hops for the style, but now has disappeared in the taste.

A black colored body with a big frothy textured tan head rising above. There was great hang time on the head leaving splotches of film, a thick ringlet and persistent cap. Oasted coffee in the nose. The chocolate nibs come forward in the tasting with the coffee still there. Light,-medium bodied.

Bottled as Boatswain Chocolate Stout, picked up at TJs. Black as coffee with a thin but dense and persistent tan cap that nearly blankets the glass with lace. Smokey cocoa & alcohol aroma with some rich caramel sweetness. Quite sweet flavor of char and cocoa. Neither bad nor great. Slight metallic tang detracting, as if someone dropped a nickel into the glass. Odd textural combo of velvety cream with prickly carbonation; weighty & sticky, but not very. There are better stouts for the price.

Had as Boatswain Chocolate Stout. Comes out of the bottle a beautiful warm sable with a very thick and rather persistent tan head. Aroma has roast malt, chocolate and coffee notes with a hint of caramel. Smoky flavor builds on a roast malt core with coffee, semi-sweet chocolate and caramel plus a hint of horehound. Smooth, firm texture is quite fizzy and lively. Boatswain or bunny, it's a good choice.

Dark beer that leaves a bitter chocolate aftertaste. The lady at the brewery where I tried it mixed some Blumers Cream Soda with the beer and it was amazing. Mix the beer 50/50 with the soda to get the best flavor. The cream soda takes the bitterness and aftertase away.

Brewed By Rhinelander Brewing Company, believe it is the same place. Pours a watery black with a small head that disappears quickly. Aroma is more of a swill macro brew than a stout. taste is in one word, BAD. Hints of roasts and that's about it. Dry and metallic and finished off non existent. one of the worst stout I have had. If I had known it was brewed by Minhas I would have never bought it. Bleh.

Pours rich and thick with a 3 finger foam head. Smells of cocoa and grain. Deep black beer with a big, cream cap. The mouth is a little thinner than I'd like, but the taste is superb. Metallic grain and milk chocolate. If I closed my eyes, I'd swear this was drinking chocolate milk. I love this stuff!

I had this as the Boatswain Chocolate Stout. My friend brought it back from one of his trips to...somewhere. Decent body, nice and dark. It has the same soft, mealy texture as the DIPA (which is not a DIPA). Lots of dark bitter chocolate and some hints of coffee. Interestingly enough, my wife tasted more coffee than chocolate. Definately subpar, but not undrinkable.

    22oz bottle -

Picked up a bomber of this while at Trader Joe's. This was a pretty bad attempt at a stout, let alone a chocolate stout. The aroma starts out with some V-8 juice, light metallic notes with some basic really light coffee aroma. Flavor suffers the same fate as the aroma, just an awful messy beer with a fake chocolate syrup like flavor, but even that was very light and chalky. Blech.
