Sampled from bottle. Pours murky copper with lots of sediment. Ugly beer. Pleasant citrus hop aroma. Fair amount of toasted/crystal in aroma and flavor. So much so that the hop character is diminished. Pleasant bitterness. Too ugly and too much caramel for an $8 single hop series beer.

Sampled on 1/21/2012. This IPA pours a slightly cloudy orange gold color from a 12oz bottle. Small to medium sized white foamy head, with decent retention and nice lacing. The aroma is caramel, fruity and sweet, floral and earthy hops. A medium bodied India Pale Ale. The malts are fruity and sweet, touch of tropical fruit and mangos. The hops are floral and earthy, slightly spicy. Decent carbonation. Medium Bitterness IPA, which last throughout the taste. There is a touch of sweetness at the finish. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and crisp. Aftertaste is slightly to medium bitter.

I went into this sampling with excitement. MIkkeller's single hop series is a great concept and this marks the first of the 18 I hope to sample (currently have 10 in my possession). Amarillo is my favorite hop (or so I think going into this experiment) so it gets the honor of going first. Pours bright copper-orange, slightly cloudy, with creamy, lasting head. Thick sheets of lacing remain in the glass. Aroma features earthy malt notes playing against grassy hops character. The flavor is bitter, pleasantly astringent. The character of the hop really shines. I never use the word catty, but it comes to mind here, in a good way. Really delicious. Medium bodied and well carbonated, subtly warming.

Hoppy aroma has an undertone of hay and more than a hint of apple. It pours a hazy dark copper, bordering on mahogany, with a fairly fluffy and somewhat persistent light tan head that leaves some good lacing. Flavor is fairly hoppy and has a rather strong malty note for an IPA, as well as a firm fruity undertone and a floral hint. Full-bodied texture is smooth and a little fizzy, though it lacks the edginess I frequently find in IPAs. Still, a decent and worthwhile brew.

Standard looking beer. Aroma is mostly bitter with very little fruit, very limited malt character mostly just a chemical bitter hop aroma. There are mild amounts of fresh cut wet wood in here. Taste is the same, heavy bitter with no flavor, some wood almost an astringent taste. Bitter, bitter, bitter. Not really a fan of the single hop brew, I guess I like the more citrusy/fruits hops ( see tomahawk )even if this had a floral aspect to it I’d like it more but it does not. FAWK!!!!!!!!! Just dropped my glass, beer everywhere, broken glass, the floor taste ok as I lick it.

Bottled (As Mikkeller Single Hop Amarillo IPA@Esplanadi, Tampere. Amber colour, small beige head, that leaves good lace. Aroma is grass, fruits, some mild bitterness. Flavour is rather bitter grass, fruits and some mild floral notes. Mild acidicness.

Bottle, home. It’s a persimmon-colored beer with a huge pillowy head, like a thick whipped cream. The malt is way off somewhere in the background, pushing the hops front and center. It’s bitter, though definitely not the bitterest so far, with a big grapefruit rind note. Unlike Simcoe, which I would eat raw if it was cheaper, Amarillo doesn’t quite work by itself. However, it’s a pleasure to taste it alone here. Amarillo seems to have a sweet, candy orange flavor with a bitter grapefruit finish. It’s a bit one-dimensional, but this beer is a big help in identifying the flavor in other beers with a mix of hops.

From Knightly. Amber color, thick off-white head, decent lacing. The aroma is very mild; banana and bubblegum? I don’t know, those were my first thoughts. Some saaz and caramel round out the scent, which didn’t have me overly excited to drink the beer. The flavor is better. Very bitter. Resiny hops, strong dough and caramel flavor, with some biscuity saaz. Not bad but kind of strange. The Tomahawk was better but I’m enjoying trying these IPA’s that showcase a single hop.

A big thanks to cquiroga for bringing this beer to the Woodshop tasting at Stuffed Sandwich in San Gabriel, CA. nice hop aroma, the flavor has a good balance between hops & malt.
