Conspiracy is a collaboration brew between Midnight Sun Brewing and Pelican Pub & Brewery. During a trip to Alaska for the Great Alaskan Beer & Barley Wine Fest, Ben Love of Pelican conspired with Gabe Fletcher and Ben Johnson of Midnight Sun to brew a Belgian-Style Black Beer. Conspiracy features a rich, spicy aroma with hints of dark fruit, raisin, roast and caramel. A toasted and slightly roasty flavor lead into caramel and a super smooth finish. Debittered black malt was used to get the jet-black color and tan head without adding significant roast flavor. The brewers also added Belgian candi sugar and Mexican Piloncillo sugar (a maple-sugar-like brown sugar) to increase fermentability and depth of flavor. Conspiracy comes in at 8.5 percent ABV and 25 IBUs

Pours opaque sable with a fair but effervescent tan head. Aroma delivers roast malt, mocha and molasses notes plus a hint of - anchovies? Flavor offers mocha, roast malt and molasses tones, though the anchovy character apparently has swum away. Mouthfeel shows average fizz and body. Conspire over a crater.

Bottle from CaptainCougar. Pour was dark brown-black, some reddish colored edges, ok head, but not overwhelming for the style. Aroma of spices, dark fruits, light chocolate and roast. Flavor is a dry vinous-fruity base over chocolate, bready-yeast, brown-sugar and licorice even. An interesting brew that was definitely enjoyable at cellar temps vs. 40F fridge temps. The mouthfeel was dry, spicey-zing, a tad hot. Nice, not great, enjoyable, nonetheless. Thanks, Tom, for the bottle!

Bottled. thanks to omhper! opaque black with a low pale brown head. Big sharp yeasty and a big fruity aroma of cherries, all-spice, wood, tart raspberries and gunpowder. Full, dryish and spicy flavour of nuts, fudge, salt, nuts cocoa and alcohol. Long clean finish of tart chocolate, pepper, mild licorice, and figs.

A big thanks to cquiroga for bringing this beer to the Woodshop tasting at Stuffed Sandwich in San Gabriel, CA. This was a very nice beer. Sweet, dark, malty and easy drinking, you could make a lot of this disappear in a hurry.
