A very strong and thick stout. As always you can't go wrong with Mad River brews. This stout is quite good and has a great aroma and appearance. Enjoy this if you can.

Pours black black black with a light brown head. Aroma is dark roast coffee with lots of chocolate. Mouth is dry. Flavor is cocoa …bitter chocolate and loads of coffee. I think this makes it just fantastic, I would not want it to be sweet at all so this is right on target.

6.5%- A solid stout. Could use a bit more hops. On the thicker side and heavy on the chocolate malt. Grabbed a single first to sample, but would be something I'd get again. Lots of stuff out there that are comparable or better though, that are little less expensive.

Aroma is strong and nose-filling, rich, oily and smoky with a firm overtone of molasses, what I expect from a quality stout. It pours a deep, opaque sable, a whisker above black, with a fairly thick and fine-bubbled light tan head. Perky flavor is smoky and malty with tones of quality roast coffee and molasses, slightly sweet and smoky. Texture is smooth yet fairly fizzy, leaving a subtle tingle.

mild hops, heavily roasted aroma and flavor. this is an above average stout, but i do wish the mouthfeel was a little heavier. great mingling of the malt and light hops, though.

This an excellent stout, stubby bottle poured very thick into the bottle. I thought it tasted good and was everything that a stout was supposed to be, The only shortcoming was the bottle with the dang twist off top. Thats not the brewers fault, management once again. I would recommend this beer.

This is a black to dark brown brew than has a deep leathery tan head. The aroma is of the bitter notes coffee and chocolate. The mouthfeel is creamy and thick. The flvor is definately roasted coffee, it tastes like many other infamous stouts. Overall it is a wonderful beer.

A decent stout, but not a standout. It starts on pour with a nice black body and a creamy tan head. There is decent lacing left. The nose and flavor to match is of roasted malts with chocolate and coffee flavors, with an emphasis on the coffee in the nose.

Marvelous stout from California, this is exceptional and reminds me very much of the great Bell's Kalamazoo Stout. It's nice to be reminded that a well crafted stout doesn't need to be of the Imperial variety. Opaque, dense brown/black color with a 3/4" thick dark tan head and a nice blanket of lacing around the glass. Aromas of sweet plums and fresh coffee along with roasted nuts and chocolate milk. Hearty body with an initial sweetness that soon turns to a smooth burnt bitterness. Velvety and rich, yet still drinkable. Lively on the palate, you aren't burdened with too much heaviness. Toasted malts with some lightly burnt flavors really come through in the flavor. Coffee with milk and sugar seem to be stirred into this one. Hints of chocolate and dark fruits with roasted nuts and a sprinkling of fresh floral hops. A balanced stout that deserves to be in the upper echelon of it's style, well done.

Bottled (Thanks heemer77). Black/very dark brown colour iwth small brown head. Aroma is coffee, roasted malts, some flowery hops and a bit chocolate. Flavour is old acidic coffee, some hops and slightly roasted malts. Quite pleasant, but the coffeeish acidicness makes it a bit out of balance.

Short stubby 12 oz bottle. Beautiful black pour into my glass. It comes out really viscous. Thick and slow. Attractive brown beer aroma like those wax lips and luscious old campfire coals. I even smell some chocolate milk in there! Coats the inside of your mouth like used shovelhead oil. Carbonation is low medium but that does not curtail any creamy tingliness. The creamy carbonation is one of the better features. Taste impact is like a yeungling black and tan filtered thru old cooled campfire coals that have been put out with creek water. Bitterness on the back of the throat that reminds me of meat that has been charred heavily on the grill. This is quite impressive and offensive to an extent. Finish is annoying burned dark chocolate again like dark chocolate brownies that have been baked way too long on too high a temperature. Now, think about dipping those brownies in strong cold black coffee before you eat them.
