Some say the locals in Einbeck, Germany, used to brew bock beer to ward off the stubborn winter (after all, bock is the German word for "goat" and the style is brewed under the sign of Capricorn). Others say it's simply what came out of the brewery as a result of spring cleaning. We craft our hearty, chocolate-inflected Split Rock Bock to keep Northlanders warm at the annual Fitgers Bock Fest each March. You see, March is a long way from spring in Duluth, so we use five malts to give it a rich body and an extra hind-leg kick - in case you find yourself far from the bonfire. O.G. 1.055. Available in 12 oz. bottles.

Pours a dark amber with a sub one finger head that goes down very fast. Carbonation is very slow but is decent. Aroma is strong of roasted malts and chocolate. Taste is fairly light actually. Hints of malts with somewhat of a spice note at the end. Finishes off watery. Not much with this one but is drinkable.

06.07.05 12oz bottle thanks to footbalm. The pour is deep and dark brown with caramel highlights; small, fading tan head. Aroma is an unusual afront of something vinous, sour, and briney, but underneath that is a smooth burnt cocoa thing. The flavor is tart again, lactic, some raw cocoa. Well, this could certainly use even a hint of sweetness but it’s all mild and sour. It finishes with something metallic. Interesting, it reminds me of some of the dark milds I’ve tried, but not really the good ones. Huh.
