It is a deep golden color with a sturdy white head. The aromas of biscuity barley, wheat and citrusy hops bring to mind an English muffin slathered with orange marmalade. The flavor is a balance of soft, biscuity malt and lingering orangey Cascade hops. The finish is crisp and dry. Good Ol’ Boy is the perfect beer to invite to a backyard barbecue: Think cheeseburgers, ribs and grilled chicken. He’s equally neighborly to salads and sausages. In a cheese mood? Try Good Ol’ Boy with soft rind cheeses, triple cream or an aged Gouda. Pale Ales originated in England in the early 18th Century with the advent of coke-fired malting kilns. This new technology made it possible to brew beers lighter than the brown ales that had been the norm. These beers, when served on cask, were often referred to as bitters, to distinguish them from the less hoppy milds, browns and porters. American craft brewers have added a new dimension to pale ales by bumping up the bitterness and using U.S.-grown hops.
