In the beginning… we created Karl Strauss Amber Lager. Generous amounts of caramel and Munich malts give the beer rich caramel flavors, balanced by a background of Cascade hops. After the beer is cold fermented for a clean, smooth finish, we filter it - not once, but twice- to enhance its bright, bronze color. Our flagship Amber Lager was also Karl’s favorite beer. Born and raised in his father’s brewery, Karl spent his life making beer. His work was inspired by a simple truth: life was meant to be enjoyed, preferably with good friends and good beer. That’s why every keg that comes out of our brewery is stamped with his name. It’s a reminder of why we do what we do.

Rated Nov. 2006. On tap at Columbia Street brewery. Clear copper color with lasting off white head. Aroma is light with hints of caramel maltiness and fresh dark bread. The flavor is full malt richness. Caramel and roasted malts are fresh and in good agreement. Nice even hop bite to balance the malts. Almost buttery bread finish that leaves a great aftertaste with the caramel sweetness.

Caramel aroma and sweet to the pallette. Requisite amber color with a moderate head and decent lacing. Bold flavor, yet well-balanced. A very drinkable beer.

A very, very nice Vienna and I was really quite suprised at it, as I didn’t really have much info going into this beer. The aroma had a huge caramel profile, slightly vegetal but mostly it’s just the sweet caramel angle, which was nice albeit one dimensional. Caramel sweetness on the palate really takes front and center also with some light nut and honey notes, but again...heaping doses of caramel. Nothing heavy, it finishes really clean and it’s quite easy drinking. 2 for 2 tonight with damned good, easy drinking beers.

a more malt heavy amber, but full flavored, even with the lighter amount of hops. nutty caramel and toffee in the nose and flavor. ruby in color. looks nice. good beer, although i usually like a touch more hops.

This was sampled at the Town and Country in San Diego. Poured a light amberwith a malt nose and taste. Hints of sweetnesss were also noted. The mouthfeel was very smooth. I paired this with mexican food. It went quite well.

Good head that is firm and well-formed; noticably chewy; fresh malty aroma; good mouthfeel; warm, acceptble flavor; goo balance with no astringency; nice lace. A very nice beer--enjoyed drinking it--one of my Strauss favorites.

Perhaps this is a beer that I take for granted (since it's on tap at seemingly every single bar and pub between the U.S/Mexico border, Orange County, and Arizona), but this flagship beer of Karl Strauss has never really interested me . A palatable choice for your East Coast Sam Adams-drinking cousins when they are in town, but nothing that I can ever get excited about. It also one of the few beers that tastes almost identical from bottle or off the tap. Not horrible, but definately not the best of what San Diego has to offer. //TB

Medium gold color, small head. Mild malts and hops. Mild flavor, good balance of hops and malts. Slight taste of roasted malts, very subtle. Finish is smooth. Aftertaste is slightly malty, no bitterness.

This amber colored brew has a slightly sweet taste. It’s not a ’big’ beer, but is good in its own right.

Strong flavored and really good. Absolutely no bitterness in this one. I had it out of the bottle too, not the tap like everyone else.
