The Jopenkerk is officially called Jacobskerk (St. James Church). The church was inaugurated on 16 July 1911. There is a plaque in the hallway which commemorates this event. To not let the 100th anniversary of the church go unnoticed, we have brewed a beer called Jopen Jacobus RPA. Jacobus (James) is the patron saint of pilgrims, recognizable by the scallop shell – also known as St. James’s Shell. In the past, these pilgrims spent the night in guest houses along the route of their journey. Because of these visitors, these guest houses had a special arrangement with the tax authorities: they were exempt from excise duty as long as they brewed with rye. Hence we have chosen to make Jacobus beer a rye beer: a Rye Pale Ale.

330 ml bottle, Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 5.3%. Golden brown colour, slightly hazy. Moderate white head. Dryish aroma of wood and lightly roasted malts, hints of ashes. Dry flavour with a slight fruity acidity, notes of wood, rye bread and lightly roasted malts again, some resin. Medium bitter aftertaste.

Pours a clear dark amber, almost mahogany, with a thick and fairly persistent buff head. Aroma has firm rye and hoppy components, rather tempting. Flavor echoes the rye and hops of the aroma, only stronger, and adds a bit of apple to the mix. Texture is smooth and fizzy, leaving a nice rye finish.
