Embrace the Funk Fest. Thin brown pour, light tan head, some lacing. Soured roasted malt aroma and flavor, light vinegar, ripe fruits, more sour and tart, initially unpleasant but better as it warms. Different and not for the light palate.

Bottle pour into a tupip is brownish black with a sticky, thin white head. Aromas of coffee and dark malts, very pleasant even though I know the funkiness will be present in the taste. Tart sourness is intertwined with roasty malts makes it easy to drink and interesting. I rate this rather high, but will admit that it walks a fine line between some of the infected brews I've had. Jolly Pumpkin can pull this off, but I can see why this isn't for everyone.

definitely has that JP house character, but this keg has some extra age and conditioning on it, making it even more funky & sour than usual. interesting interplay with the darker, dark fruity malts for sure. not something I could drink a ton of, but quite good in smaller doses.

750 ml bottle, Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV 8.1%. Blend 4, bottled 20. Jan. 2011. My bottle was a big time gusher, half of the content came out of the bottle by its own will. I know Jolly Pumpkin have wild yeast in all their beers, but this one was too wild. Pitch black colour, foamy tan head. Strong aroma of wild yeast / farmhouse, vinegar and roasted malts, notes of dark chocolate and coffee. The flavour is medium sour and vinegary, does not blend in well at all with the roasty notes of a stout. Clearly infected.

Really nice offering, BUT the only characteristic of a stout is the appearance. Rating may not do the total product justice, but it's a misleading beer and I put down good coin expecting a hearty stout rounded out by the Jolly Pumpkin house funk, instead I got an overly sour funky beer that drowned out any stout aroma/flavor that may have been in there. Very interesting beer.

Had this during a couple of tastings.. Pours black, good wispy foam - typical JP lacing .. . Flavours of tar, funk, light smoky chocolate, and the black stripe off a raccoon .. . Not the most memorable JP but still tasty! .. . I will have the enchilada platter with two tacos and no guacamoles...

June 2009 - Well, I can understand those who like it...big, dark pour with frothy two finger head and lots of roasted malts leaping from the glass. I smell "sour" though...not that I shouldn’t have expected it from JP. Anyway, I drank it cold, I drank it warm. The sour just seemed misplaced in this style and I just couldn’t enjoy it, no matter how much I tried.

Bottled@Beer Hunters, Pori. Deep ambery brown colour, mediumsized beige head. Aroma is dark fruits, roasted malts, some slight vanilla as well as some rather big bittery notes as well. Flavour is dark dry fruits, some roasted malts, tobaccco and coffee as well. Aftertaste is coffee, tobacco and some bitterness.

If you have this in a bottle, be very careful opening it because it foams like all-get-out! Pours a rich, opaque sable with a very thick and fairly persistent dark tan head. Aroma is fairly strong and has chocolate, smoky and coffee components. Flavor is like cold coffee with some sweet fizz and an undertone of dark chocolate. There is also some apple flavor and a bit of an alcohol nip, giving the taste a cidery component. Texture is smooth but not watery.

Bottle courtesy of Hogtownharry: Poured a deep black color stout with a big light brown foamy head with some good retention and minimal lacing. Aroma of roasted malt is mix with some sour bretty notes. Taste is also a mix between some roasted bitter malt notes with some sour and bretty notes which didn’t mix very well IMO. Medium body with some good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. I am usually one up for experiment but the mix between stout and bretty Belgian is something I could do without.
