This beer is based on Ise Kadoya’s award-winnning Pale Ale recipe, taken to another level by adding "arare" roasted brown rice to create a truly innovative and thoroughly Japanse-style beer. The resulting "genmai" flavored ale gives a refreshingly crisp hoppy flavor and a bitter finish. This recipe even made some Japanese microbrewers stand up and take notice, a true rarity in Japan.

Pours a huge white head, but it peeters out pretty fast, leaving only a scant white foam on top. Body is deep orange, almost light amber. Surprise, surprise. The aroma is like white brown rice! Kind of light smoky and woody. Light sweetness when first drinking, but that fades to a mostly grainy taste to it. If you’ve had brown rice you know what I’m talking about. Almost like granola. Not something I’m likely to buy again.

Sampled on 6/6/2009. This specialty grain beer pours a slightly opaque amber color from a 50cl bottle. Medium sized white foamy head with decent lacing and nice retention. The aroma is fruity and sweet, tea, brown rice and a little herbal. A medium bodied ale. The malts are caramel and sweet, with some noticeable brown rice flavors, but in a good way. The hops are herbal and floral. This beer really reminds me of an amber, but with a much heavier mouthfeel, and a nice herbal tone from the rice. A very drinkable beer, interesting and somewhat different. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet.
