Innis & Gunn Rum Cask Oak Aged Beer

Darkish brown colour with brownish head. Aroma is really weak and sweetish. Taste is oakey and sweet and not very beer-like. After-taste is lacking personality with some hints to cookies and caramel. Not very good.

6.8% on tap...flight at The Hourglass Brewery in Longwood, FL. This could be my favorite I & G so far. The rum adds a touch of sweetness that isn't overwhelming like some of their others. Has a clear amber-mahogany appearance. Mild rum, oak, and caramel malt flavors. I'd probably buy a bottle of this if I saw it around.

Aroma - golden raisins soaked in rum and cinnamon, slight coffee and butterscotch too...loved it!

Appearance - pretty average looking, crystal clear copper body with a small white head, average retention

Mouthfeel - fizzy/seltzer like upfront, with a little zing on the backend...medium bodied.

Flavor - honey, oak, butterscotch, toffee, some light wood. Bordering on a dessert beer, it's tasty though. I'd buy this again.

Pours a very thin head but goes away fast. Has a dark coppery/brownish appearance with reddish hues. The rum is actually a little bit noticeable in the aromas with some roasted malts. Flavours are mostly sweet malts, mild caramel and toffee. Also some raisins. The rum flavour is pretty strong actually and it's not really my type of beer mix. Slick oily mouthfeel. Not bad.

Had this since Novermber 2008. (57-day aged variant). Dark, clear copper pour under a big foamy head which oddly enough, left not a trace of lacie. Aroma of malt and rum. Flavour also was malt and rum. Pleasingly smooth mouthfeel, but too sweet at the finish. The 107-day aged had a delicious rum scent to the pour, and a lot of sediment in the bottom of the bottle. Almost too much rum in the flavour.

Nose is predominately whisky with some bread, some coffe notes as it warms. Me no like. Pours a decent whitish head that is quite short lasting. Body is a dark clear copper, almost no lace. Mouth is watery. Flavor is predominately sweet. Maple syrup notes with a fair bit of malt and a sweet whiskey finish. How do you rate flavor on this odd-ball whisky/oak strong ale? I think you say that this is NOT what a strong ale should taste like, add 1 pt since its odd and give it a 6. Will not drink this again. And its over-priced.

Bottle given to me by a friend. Lovely ruddy translucent brown to ruby orange, but no head to speak of. Crazy strong rum aroma right off the pour with notes of vanilla, raisin, caramel, toasted coconut, and alcohol. I really enjoyed sniffing this as I let it warm up a little. Malty sweetness, toasted coconut, and vanilla are right up front when I sip it, then the bold and somewhat alcoholic assertion of rum. Very mild bitter & woody finish juxtaposes the sweetness, making the flavor a little more complex. Over time, it seems more bready. Quite wet and thin with minimal carbonation, though faintly sticky; smooth drinking; would be easy alongside food. Be forewarned, though: the lightness belies the ABV: this one's got kick. I rather like this one.

Dark translucent brown with a bubbly head that fades quickly. Mild rum aroma with vanilla and spice. Tastes malty and fruity with a little rum, spice and vanilla. Smooth medium body. Not a big I&G fan but this is ok.

Sampled immediately after their original oak aged offering, and substantially better. Deep amber pour with a 1" lasting tan head and heavy lacing. Rich and fruity with a big malt smoothness. Honey, toast, brown sugar, wood, vanilla, toffee and some berries. Very good.

Never had a rum barrel beer before, and I probably never will again. Dark brown in color, with a light quick-dissolving head. All the rum sweetness comes though, a little bit of heat. Rather thin mouthfeel. A little woody. An ok beer; don't know if it is worth it to try another from I & G.
