Thanks Bill!! ..very excited to try this! .. Pours tan .. light foam .. good simple lacing .. . vanilla, wood, biscuit, oak, and caramel .. . light and classy .. . aged quite well! .. . . Why do people in ship mutinies always ask for "better treatment"? I'd ask for a pinball machine, because with all that rocking back and forth you'd probably be able to get a lot of free games..

The 1999 version was supposed to very similar to the 1998 version, but I didn't see the comparison. The 1999 was weaker in both body and flavour with the alcohol being noticeable to a greater degree.

Ruby red colour, mediumsized brown head. Sweet caramel and plum in aroma. Flavour is alcohol, plum, malts and some yeast. Once it becomes a bit warmer the alcohol is more present (this I didn’t notice on the 2005 version). Palate is good, but the alcohol makes the beer a bit sticky when getting warmer. Overall the alcohol is sadly a bit disturbing in this 1999 version.

(bottle #03608) Beatiful deep amber colour, small head. Rich aroma of port, dried dark fruit, raisin, sherry and nuts. Malty and deep flavour of port, raisin, figs, oak, dark berries, dried plums, almonds with a vinous alcoholic note. Feels very mature, maybe too mature, but it’s a very nice, malty, classy earwarming brew.

the head is weak with nice laces, the color is cobber, the aroma is some port and spice with and oak trace, the feel is medium and decent carb, the taste is sweet port and a tight hops bite in the end

This beer is probably going past its prime. Alcohol is noticeable but not overwhelming. Funky grapiness, fairly sweet but not cloying and a flavor that I can only describe as rum-like that I notice in some old beers. Body is a nice dark stained oak and the head was surprisingly peppy for a fairly strong beer that's four years old. The hops had long since gone the way of the dinosaur though. I remember the Vintage 2001 still had a bit of a bite to it. This had none.

Bottle#83661. First let me say, anyone in Orange County should visit Hollingshead deli regularly. The elder Hollingshead has a stash of vintage brews that get broken out every now and then that makes it worthwhile. Now on to the beer. Pours a beautiful deep amber with a thick head. Nose is of thick sweet malt with just a hint of hop. I kinda expected this to taste like the other vintages but not so. Big mouthfeel with a sweetness at first but followed up quickly by a hop bite that just cuts through enough to bring a great balance to this beer. Very deserving of its spot in the top 50.

Bottle no. 21166, 550 ml, at Plan B, Copenhagen, august 2005. Cloudy chestnut colour, moderate head. Vinous aroma, raisins, oak. Flavour is very full and rich, old port or madeira, plenty of oak, hoppy and oaky aftertaste. Clearly a top notch beer.

Medium brown color, medium head. Deep malt aroma, intense malt flavors. Somewhat hoppy. Full flavor, fully rounded mouthfeel. Malts have an ‘aged’ taste, smoky sort of like a good scotch. Very smooth. Even with a high alcohol content (8.5%) not a noticeable alcohol bite. Finish is smooth and clean. Aftertaste is malty and smoky. A wonderful beer.
