Brewing was very much a part of farm life in old Norway. Indeed farmers were required by law to make beer and could loose their lands if this duty was neglected. Custom called for a specialy hearty but thirst quenching ale at harvest-time. This Hesjeøl- or harvest ale is a recreation of this beer style.

COMPLETE REVISON 11/2016 I suppose if you have to fit its into a category Saison is OK, but really thinks a "traditional" ale. Very unusual nose, licorice, ripe fruit, grass. Not quite clear pale apricot colored body topped with good and long lasting head and OK lace. Mouth is a medium with good fiz. Flavor is so unusual its hard to read. Tastes of rye, some funk, lightly smoked malts, great battering finish very dry. Truly unfiltered it left a serious amount of gunk in the bottom of the bottle. I really really loved this beer.

Lots of sediment on the bottom of the bottle and to do a little turning to get it mixed. Pours a very cloudy yellow with a very corbonated white fluffy head. Aroma is very fruity with hints of honey. Taste is very complex, even for a saison. Hints of fruits, honey, and dough. Finishes off slightly metallic. Overall a nice and very complex brew good for sipping on a cold night. Nicely done. Skol!

First of the style, not a huge fan, not a easy sipper, but the flavour profile is certainly unique. The aroma is of leather, peach, apricot, yeast, slight sourdough, something spicy, fruity hops. Fairly sweet which I do not love. Bit of smoke, medium bodied. Some rough edges... its decent, just not a style I think I could ever get into, even though I like saison in general.

Bottled (from Kihoskh, Copenhagen). Hazy ambery brown colour, mediumsized beige head. Aroma is leather, yeast, spices, earth and some mild notes of fruits. Flavour is spices, leather, some wood, earth and mild yeastyness.

Sampled on 11/6/2010. Batch 254 Bottled on 11/29/09. This traditional ale pours a medium orange gold color from a 500ml bottle. Medium sized white foamy head. The aroma is fruity, sweet, smoky and spicy. Medium bodied traditional ale. The malts are fruity and sweet, smoky and spruce. The hops are herbal and spicy. Lively carbonation. A nice mix of smoke, spice and other flavors. An interesting beer for a cool autumn evening. Very drinkable. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly bitter with a touch of spice.

Bottle, Batch 254, home. This beer pours a tawny shade of sienna with a small beige-ish head. The aroma is big mix of caramel malt, spicy rye, smoke, oak and floral hops. There’s also what I now recognize as a wild yeast note from Haand’s own strain. The flavor is medium sweet, smoke and more of that interesting yeast. This is another very good beer from an excellent brewery.

500 ml bottle, batch #240, from Vinmonopolet. ABV is 6.5%. Light brown hazy colour, big off-white head. Lovely aroma of fruity hops and orange peel, also notes of Belgian ale yeast and mild spices. The flavour is a bit too sweet for a beer for sweaty farm workers, but still good - also fruity, yeasty and spicy notes, hints of caramel, with a distinct hoppy bitterness and a hint of smoke in the finish.
