Guinness Extra Stout

Pours opaque coffee brown with a thick and persistent light tan head. Aroma offers roast malt, coffee and treacle tones. Flavor ups the coffee character and adds a little woody hops to the mix. Body seems thin for a stout, though, and fizz is not too strong; still, it leaves a smooth, pleasing, roast-malt and coffee finish. Extra, extra, drink all about it!

Bottle. Colour – Very dark brown, solid, cascading head, good lacing. Aroma – tea, coffee, roasted malt, nuts. Mouthfeel – Medium to full bodied, creamy, good carbonation. Flavour – nutty malt, coffee, roasted malt, chocolate.

Pours out a dark brown color with a thick lingering tan head. The aroma is of heavy malt. The mouthfeel just a little thin. The taste is of roasted malt with just a slight note of coffee.

Using a bottle for this review. Opaque black brew with brown edges, thick and dense khaki head that leaves a lot of lace as it slowly dissipates. Aroma is sweet, sour, and smokey with mild yeastiness. Both woody and raisiny flavors on top of the almost extreme char, but with a very hop bitter and yeasty finish that makes it good with very salty, sour, and/or spicy foods. Some stouts are best enjoyed on their own, but I do prefer Guinness with food. Decent body and weight, not very sticky.

Nice dark color. Slow settling foam head. Nice stout taste. I used this beer to make a decadent Guinness birthday mug cake with Guinness icing. Dark brown color and slowly settling thick foam head. Leaving lacing on glass and sticks to lip. Sweet smell, but also chocolate. Taste like guinness, unique, nothing like it. (Ufa 201202)

For many years, if you wanted to portray yourself as a sophisticated beer drinker in Canada, you drank Guinness. Unfortunately for many years, that meant going to your local pub and payong through the nose. The bottled version is certainly a great tasting beer. Not as dark as the draught version, and not as flavourful as the plethora of Imperial Stouts available these days, it is still a great beer.

Unsure of why I've never rated this beer, but it seems to be that this beer has somehow gone unrated. I've had it numerous times, but bought a bottle to share and rate w/ my brother. The beer pours out a really nice dark brown/black body with chocolate brown edges. The cap is a frothy 1-finger tan head that seemed to last nearly the entire glass. Aroma is light roasted grain notes/coffee with a touch of vanilla and tea bags. Flavor is really muted unfortunately, with some light roasted notes, tea-like tannins, and just a general watered-down like flavor. I know Guinness gets lots of love around the world, but this version brewed in Canada just seems like a watered-down version of a decent stout.

I think if you were to tell me this wasn't just regular Guiness that was naturally carbonated I would call you a liar, however, the packaging does claim it to be something different. Not much on aroma and maybe just a hint sweeter and roastier than the regular version, appearance is strong though, good black with a thick rocky head.

Proper tan/khaki colored head with a worthy dark brown to black color with the deep red highlights. The head retention was not as pronounced as I thought it would be nor did it stick around as long as I thought it might. Nice little ring left though. Dry, roasted, woody aroma. A dab of the cream or creaminess slivers through to the nose. Almost detecting a dried fruit. Like dried raisins or plums. Hints of coffee and chocolate in there also, but tend to stay in the background. Roasted or toasted grain came to me at first with the taste. Malt character seems a bit sharp, but in a good way. Like most Stouts, the burnt coffee is an outstanding trait that helps round out the taste. Seems dryer than most in the mouthfeel. Medium to more full in the mouthfeel. Chewy and mostly smooth. A bit warming with moderate carbonation. This brew is easily likable. Easy drinking and follows the qualities of a proper Stout. Always solid and would be a smart choice when left with limited opptions. Are there better Stouts? Sure, but a person couldn't go wrong by selecting this one in my opinion.
