This porter is brewed with respect for its past but with some modern inspiration. The Robust Porter pours a luscious black with a thick mocha layer of protection that invites the drinker to the glass. The rich but gentle roast malt character and chocolate notes are picked up on both the aroma and the palate and are best expressed when the beer is not too cold. Great Lakes 25th Anniversary Robust Porter is being released in a limited run of 2000 wax-dipped 750 ml bottles, retailing for $9.95 per bottle.

Single from the LCBO with a wax-covered cap, leaking-dry on the side of the neck. Pours a real dark brown colour with hardly any red highlights. Beautiful light brown coloured head, great retention and creamy thick lacing. Burnt malt scent with dark fruits (plums, raisins, dates) and notes of coffee, chocolate, nuts and biscuits. Quite smooth mouthfeel with no burning at all and medium-bodied. The taste is milder, as in well-balanced with pretty much all that is found in the nose. Decent hop flavours as well in the finish creating some nice bitterness with the roasted malts in the afteratste. This is quite a good porter with loads of aromas and tastes that goes down nicely. Hope they do this one again at one point.

On tap at Gig's - dark brown opaque ale with a righ mocha cap. Light carbonation. Rich malty-roasty lightly sweet chocolate nose with some succulent and dark fruit tones. Rich mouth feel (oats?). Bight chew of roasty semi sweet malt in the front, some fruity complexity, long wet slowy bittering finish with a hop bite at the end. A hybrid with Stout body and smoothness and porter light sweetness and fruity character - great drinking for such a big beer.

The beer poured a solid black colour with a very brown long lasting head. The aroma was roasted malt, coffee, chocolate, and a hint of licorice. Mouthfeel was medium bodied, with mild carbonation. The flavour was bitter coffee, some sweet chocolate hints, and some licorice and molasses hints. Still, not as impressive as I hoped it would be.
