Gouden Carolus Ambrio, the third colour of the “Great to Beer a Belgian” tricolour. Ambrio is a ‘amber’ coloured beer, brewed with ‘brio’. In the past, every town in Belgium had its own beer typical of the area. Ambrio has its roots in the traditional beer of Mechelen known as “Mechelschen Bruynen” or "“Mechelen Brown”. Our Brewery is the only one still brewing this type of beer. The recipe has its origin in the 14th century. The present version is a little more heavy and contains more hops. The balance between the different malts, the fine hops and typical tastes of spices creates a perfect harmony between the powerful taste of brown beers and the freshness of the blond beers. This fresh aromatic and pithy light-brown drink can be served cool.

What a giant rocky head -explodes out of the beer chalis. Had to wait a few to to get all the beer in the glass. Dirty white head that lasts with ample curtains of lacing afterwards. Tasty tasty tasty. Caramel just a wiff of alcohol later. Fruit no hop assault. Get that brown bread feeling, norishing. Another keeper in the Belgique area.

I've never been attracted much to the Gouden Carolus series, but suddenly spotting it as being a newly added beer to the big collection of beers from my favourite beer pub, made me curious enough to try it. After poured it forms a ginormous head, similar to the Duvel and the other Gouden Carolus brews. The colour is dark amber with a bit of redness in it. Complex aroma that I find hard to put a finger on. There is also a cloud of yeast in the glass of wich I'm not sure if it's my fault by pouring it the wrong way. The first two tastes weren't that nice. I felt traitored by my own curiousness. But the more sips I took, the better it got. With flavours of yeast (obvious), hop and hints of nuts like almonds. This beer will never be my favourite, but I don't think it's fair to give it a low score because I can really imagine that people wil enjoy this very much. Try it yourself!

330ml bottle: poured a cloudy amber with a tight 3 finger cap. Decent retention and lacing, Soft carbonation. Aroma is pungent with yeast, fusel and malt, fruity-earthy undertones. Not much complexity as it warms. Some maltose in the front but candi sweetness predominates over yeast mustiness ,... mid palate a bit dried fruits, hop astringence, tobacco, treacle....finish is clean, bittering and surprisingly dry with some fusel alcohol tastes and warmth. Body is thin does not hide the alcohol very well and I’m not partial to these commercial over processed, high gravity candi sugar Belgi brews. They just taste cheap to me.

Second Carolus Gouden brew available from the LCBO and with a best before date of 17/11/12. Pours a golden-amber-orange colour with a big, big foamy head that leaves full dirty lacing. Even though big bubbles form at the bottom of the glass, smaller ones come up to the surface. Quite a special nose with some Belgian yeast, pine needles, bananas, citrus zest and alcohol. Creamy mouthfeel with well-hidden alcohol (no burns). Becomes hazy as the bottom of the bottle is reached with a nice glowing amber colour. Refreshing taste of apples, spices, wood, with some light caramel showing up in the finish. Then, the apples flavours come back in the aftertaste. Some metallic notes were felt at first, but seem to disappear as the brew breathes. A true Belgian ale that is quite interesting.

On tap at the Freakin Frog Nov 2008
Light copper in colour, slightly cloudy with long lasting write ropy lacing. The aroma is amazingly sweet and fruity, soft citrus, melons and peaches with a bit of caramel and light spices. The taste I found was similar to the aroma with a bit more of yeasty spice (not quite pepper, not quite licorice) with a good balance of bitterness. Smooth and soft with a lingering soft bitterness and melons. Gets a bit dull when warmer.

an interesting light flavored very fruity belgian...good malt, hop, and spicy fruit balance. hides the 8% pretty well, but it shows up more as the beer warms and gets a little heavier all around. one i may have again. 4/9/09 - had it on tap, cleaner yeast without the bottle conditioning, and I like the feel a tad better. 3.6 bottle, 3.8 tap= 3.7 average

Feb 19, 2009 On draught. At sharp edge creek house. fastidious place! Gouden carlos ambrio S5L3F1T4O7: Cloudy light brown with stuff on bottom of glass. Nice quarter inch creamy head. Head provides nice lacing during the session. Typical good Belgie aroma, clean and attractively beery. Taste is rather unrefined impressions at first. Has an alky attitude. Does not hide alky too well. Virtually flat. Finish is alky medicine linger.
