An American invention with English roots, the American pale ale is a very hoppy cousin to the English India Pale Ale. At the birth of the craft brewing industry in the late 1970's people were looking for a beer that had a full body and made a statement with hops. Captain John Harper moved to Alexandria in 1773. He purchased land on Prince Street and built brick houses known today as "Captain Row". He was a member of the first Alexandria City Council, and the Old Presbyterian Meeting house. Although his warehouses, wharves and shipping concerns and community activities kept him busy, he found time to marry twice and father 29 children.

Standard shaker-pint, at the brewpub in Downtown Alexandria, on a quiet Thursday lunchtime.
My first taste of the Founder's offerings (in fact, it was the very first pint poured that day), that definately left me both satisfied, and hankering for some more... :)
Standard appearence and aroma -- I loves me some Centennial hops! Unlike the rather unworkably rough and crude offerings that I slogged through 24 hours earlier at the Capitol City Brewing Company, this particular Pale Ale was both more adept and classier -- and had enough malt to balance out the decidedly West-Coast inspired Centennial hop bill.
Again, not that it's all that fair to compare & contrast this beer with Capitol City Brewing Company's offering, but this particular beer does show what really *should* be done with this sort of style. Lots of hops, sure --but with enough thought put into the malt bill to actually matter in the final analysis.
Nicely quaffable -- a nice touch, considering the highly abreviated brewpub stopover time I was working with, en route to Dulles Int'l Airport.
A beer both deserving of it's previously posted high BA Beer Reviews, and worthy of some serious session pounding when/if given the opprotunity. Recommended.
