A traditional Belgian-style Saison. Originally produced on the farm for seasonal workers during harvest. Tart malt is balanced with flavors of fruit and spice from our unique strain of Belgian yeast. Our interpretation of this Southern-Belgian farmhouse ale uses a partial sour-mash and the addition of freshly ground black pepper. We use a very unique strain of yeast from Belgium to add further layers of spice and complexity to this rare style of beer. Food Pairings •Walnuts, pecans, cheeses such as Trappist, Livarot, or Comte. •Beef, venison, mussels. •Root vegetables, resinous herbs (rosemary, marjoram, thyme). •Great for brazing.

Pours a slightly hazed, golden colour with a frothy off-white cap, fizzing away averagely, leaving not much lace. Aromas are more on the bitter side of things, with the Belgian yeast in the background. Kind of like rye grain, which has some spiciness, with grassy notes and hints of citrus, bananas. The taste is more on the orange flavours side. Pretty mild, with light grassy hops in the finish creating a little dryness. Not a bad beer on its own, but not my kind of Saison.

650ml bottle from LCBO. Pours an average size foamy bubbly white head, good retention, has a slightly hazy, golden appearance. Decent dirty lacing. Moderate carbonation. Aromas are fruity and yeasty, some notes of coriander and mild spices. Flavours are equally fruity, cloves, some oranges and yeast are most noticeable at the forefront. Some subtle herbal and floral hops as well. A bit of a tangy finish. Medium body. Pretty good.

I bought this over driftwoods red ale today, the motivation being the black pepper marking on the side of the beer. Its not any more there than old dried black pepper that sits in the pantry for a few years. O well, otherwise its just nice. Citrus notes, not of a kind I regularly smell. It might have something to do with the saison concept, but not done in the way I had imagined it. Slight fruit. not as bitter as i wanted. good beer, enjoyable, yes.......

Bottle: Poured a clear golden color ale with a large foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of Belgian malt with fruity ester and light barnyard notes. Taste is not as funky as expected but notes of light barnyard and fruity ester are nice but fall a bit short from some of the style best offering. Body is about average with good carbonation. Well done but unfortunately lacking some character.

Colour was a clear amber beneath a creamy white single finger-thick head. Aroma 'maybe' of a few things, being maybe some bread, maybe some citrus, maybe not hop, and maybe not malt. Taste showed a bit of malt and an equal bit of hop, but I don't know about the black pepper as indicated on the label. Mouth was okay, slightly sharp, and it finished with a sort of 'sour' bite.
