A modern update on a 9th century Finnish proto-beer. Brewed with rye, we caramelize the wort with white hot river rocks, then ferment it with a German Weizen yeast. In addition to juniper berries foraged directly from the Finnish country-side we added a sort of tea made with black tea, cardamom, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, and black pepper. The spicing is subtle and balanced and Sahtea is a highly-quaffable, truly-unique brew with a full-mouth feel.

A bright orange-bronze colored beer with a big sudsy textured, odd white head rising above. There's good hang time on the head and it settles into a thin, ghostly ringlet and islet cap. This is Chai te. Cloves and cardamom are evident and dominate in the nose and tasting. The consistency of tea.

Tasting at rockwell Bar & Grill. Orange yellow with small foam ring. Aroma is gloves for sure. Taste is spicy gloves, little bittersweet. Aftertaste short lasting. (Houston 201310)

Cloudy gold, a little orangey, poured without a head. Tart and spicy aroma of cinnamon and lemon with some coriander and orange. The flavor was also tart, but clovey with hints of bubble gum and mustard. Sweet, but complex and balanced enough. Very tiny bubbles, remarkably syrupy in a good way.

Overall this offering had my thoughts in limbo. Far from a traditional beer, DFH did a nice job incorporating the tea and spice elements into the traditional beer ingredient list. Out of the ordinary for sure. I sampled this while pouring at a DFH booth during a local beer festival. It was well received by most of the crowd and was the 1st offering from the booth that ran dry. Likely a better beer than my numbers indicate, and while I enjoyed it I don't see myself seeking it out in the future.

Bottled (thanks Thomassova4). Golden colour, small white head. Aroma is juniper, spices, herbs, some tea, mild maltyness. Quite pleasant. Flavour is herbs, spices and malts. Extremely pleasantly balanced. Nice thing.

Oct. 2009 - Thanks to eaglefan538 for sharing. This beer was sweet with a lot of ginger and coriander like spices along with some sweet fruity tea like flavors. I’m not a fan of these spicey type beers, and this was no exception.

I like Chai, so been wanting to try this for a while. Finally decided to pony up the $$$ for this. An intersting brew. Growing on me a little as I finish the 2nd half of the bottle the next night. Tasting the Chai and other spices more towards the bottom. Has a bit of a Belgian feel to it, with the Juniper/fruity taste and hop background. A bit of a minty aftertaste/feel. The 9% ABV is hidden quite well. Don't think I would get again though unless I was sharing with a buddy or two.

Deep honey color pour with a tight white head that leaves a cap throughout with little lacing. Lots in the aromas with honey, coriander, some floral, quite a bit of juniper, strong tea, oranges, lemongrass, honeysuckle. Like I said - lots going on. Taste is spicy and zesty with a bite of juniper in the front with some slight honey-like sweetness, strong cold black tea, spices - coriander especially - and lemon zest. Then a bit more of alcohol-juniper bite in the end. Nicely spicy, nicely sweet with a slight kick and zest in the end. My bottle lists abv @ 9% instead of 6% listed on description. Another nice historic recreation from Dogfish Head with their own twist to it.

Sampled on 7/19/2010. This traditional ale pours a cloudy orange gold color from a 750ml bottle. Small to medium sized white foamy head. The aroma is fruity and sweet, spicy, ginger, tea, juniper berries and lemongrass. A medium to full bodied traditional ale. The malts are fruity and sweet, lots of tea. The hops are herbal and spicy. There is a lot of flavors going on here, tea, ginger, cardamom, coriander and juniper berries. A very different beer, even if it is not entirely like beer. Good carbonation. Another one of those strange, weird and totally different beers that Dogfish head seems to come up with on a regular basis. Mouthfeel is full. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is sweet and spicy.

This beer was exceptional. It was very simply boozed up chai tea. This beer tasted exactly like chai tea so if you like that you will love this. This beer was very full bodied but exceptionally drinkable. It was refreshing and tasted of spices and herbs. This beer was my favorite of the evening - hints of green tea as well. I love this beer - one of my DFH favorites.
