Dieu Du Ciel Route des Épices (Spice Route)

341 ml bottle, merci to my Quebecois colleague Louis. ABV is 5.3%. Brown colour, minimal off-white head. Aroma of malts, caramel and over-ripe fruits, just a hint of pepper. Low carbonation. The flavour is distinctly malty, with plenty of caramel, but is not too sweet. A moderate bite of pepper in the finish, becomes very distinct in the aftertaste, and leaves a warming mouthfeel. Moreish.

Comes out of the tap an opaque chocolaty brown with a fine-bubbled pale beige, almost off-white, head. Spicy aroma is like freshly-baked rye or pumpernickel bread. Lively, spicy flavor has malty and fruity undertones and leaves a spicy finish that hangs around for a while. Texture is smooth yet edgy and quite tingly.

A brownish amber in color with a small two fingered foamy textured very light beige head that raises briefly above. A thin ringlet is left behind. Bold aroma. Bold general profile of pepper and smoky, burnt malt. Light, effervescent. Refreshing.

Was really interested in trying out peppercorn flavoring in a brew. Had tried one other brand in the past and had difficulty picking out the aroma and flavor. That is not the case with this beer - the aroma is definitely all pepper, all day (not in a bad way). Amber coloring with a full tan head. Some malt cuts through the pepper flavoring, but the pepper is the main focus. I think this flavor is great, but this beer in particular needed to integrate it into the brew a bit more. Almost had the feel of something like a Cave Creek Chili beer where all you get is hot peppers. This beer is not nearly as flawed as Cave Creek, I just wanted it to be so much better.

Pours a very little thin layer of head and quickly goes away. Has a reddish burnt copper colour. Has light malty aromas as well as a bit of spices. Flavour is of dark roasted malts, very strong and bitter aftertaste. Medium carbonation. Spiced mouthfeel, not hot, just the sensation. Hint of peppercorns not overly abundant as you would be led to expect. Also in flavour are hints of malts and notes of rye. Hops are quite mild in flavour but more noticeable in aroma. Love this stuff, and quite manageable if on a binge or just for a session.

I tried this beer on May 18, 2012 at "C'est What" in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The beer poured a dark brown into the tulip glass with very little head. The aroma was sweet malt, grains, and molasses, with some floral hops. The mouthfeel was medium bodied with medium carbonation. the flavour was grains, pepper, molasses, and some berryish notes, followed by a bitter finish. the pepper notes, while non-existent in the aroma were very pronounced in the flavour.

Route des Epices pours mahaogony in color. smells a little sweet with some pepper in there. feel is a little watery. flavor is nice but pretty mellow. the malts are pretty basic, and unfortunately the green and black peppercorns overpower the rye, which i couldn't smell or taste.

Aroma - light cake batter aroma, peppers, tropical fruits (banana?) with some subtle caramel. Interesting...

Appearance - solid dark amber hued body, 1" creamy thick head, clear

Taste - lots of pepper in this one, and I liked it. Fruity on the first sip with the banana showing up again, but the pepper notes are enjoyable for me. Rather unique.

Palate - medium bodied, slightly thick/creamy feeling feeling..long finish with the peppers.

Overall - very enjoyable beer from DdC and rarely ever disappointed in their product.

While in fact there is a hint of a bite in the mouthfeel, it's nothing to get excited about and sadly a bit watered down. The afterglow is much better, yet subtle, in that there is a lingering, very mild burn. Again, this is quite mild and enjoyable. I would like tis a lot more if the watery thing was fixed and perhaps a bit more sting were involved.

This was absolutely amazing. The pure real flavors which are done to perfect levels make this brew shine! .. . i’ll never be a man! .. peppermill action!! .. . this is made for a perfectly grilled fajita dinner!! .. i want more of this!! brains! brains!! BRAINS!!!!!!
