Jai Alai India Pale Ale pays tribute to the original extreme sport. Jai Alai, a game native to the Basque region of Spain, is played on a court called a fronton. Jai Alai players attempt to catch a ball using a curved mitt, whilst the ball travels at speeds of up to 188 miles per hour! Proving they have a sense of humor the Spanish dub this game, with its ball traveling at race car speeds, "the merry game." Tampa was once home to a busy Jai Alai fronton but sadly all that remains of Jai Alai in the Tampa Bay area is this India Pale Ale that we brew in tribute to the merry game. The India Pale Ale style of beer has its roots in the strong ales sent from England to thirsty British troops in India during the 18th century. To survive the journey the beers needed more alcohol and more hops (which act as a natural preservative). This “big” brewing practice made India Pale Ale one of the first "extreme beers" and a favorite among the Queens military men in India. Eventually it became a favorite style of the new crop of American brewers seeking more flavor and complexity than mass-market brewers were willing to offer. Pair Jai Alai India Pale Ale with Beef Empanadas (heavy on the hot sauce), Deviled Crabs (again attack it with hot sauce) and other spicy dishes.

Courtesy of CCB. Pours hazy brownish copper with tan head. The aroma is big with grapefruit, orange juice, orange peel, some grassiness, pine and a bit of cherry hard candy sweetness. The taste starts with a pulse of malt sweetness and a hint of fruity esters. Quickly the hops over-run the malts with grapefruit and pine hop bitterness flowing into orange juice late addition hop sweetness, some tangelo and a moderate level of grassiness. It ends with lingering pine to grapefruit hops and a hint of maltiness. If I was to split hairs I’d say for a straight up IPA the appearance is too hazy and dark. But I’ve seen some IIPA that look just like this one. Very solid IPA. 3.9 The last improvement on this beer has really helped (2010). It has a very assertive west coast feel hop bitterness and hop flavor that I just love. 4.1

4pk of small cans at the LCBO. Pours a huge frothy off-white head with some thick dirty lacing and has a pale orangey coloured appearance. Lively carbonation. Aromas of coconut, vanilla, yeast, some mild pine and grassy notes. Flavours are mostly some citrus and pine with the coconut sparingly in the mix, not too overpowering. Hints of caramel. Smooth and slick mouthfeel, a little bit creamy as well.

Mild nose, pineapple and pine, toffee. Pours a big pillow of a white head with good retention and lace over a clear medium amber body. Clean mouth on the thin side slightly slick not heavy on the tingle. Hits mild but the bitterness creeps (no offense Nixon) up in the aftertaste. A very balanced flavor profile, nothing stands out....some tobacco, touch of stone fruit, hint of honey, not at all cloying, very well made old style non-NEIPA IPA, Cheers!

The beer pours a slightly hazed orange-gold with a generous rocky head which lasts a while and leaves a lot of lacing. The aroma is pine, caramel, yeast, citrus and leather. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with average carbonation. The flavour is pine, caramel, and grapefruit with a decently bitter finish. The piney flavours are strong in this one.

Purchased a 6-pack of this at Publix in Kissimmee, Florida. Pours a hazy golden-orange with a warm-beige frothy-creamy head, good stay and some thick creamy lacing. Hoppy nose with citrus notes, mostly oranges. Juices and peel, with hints of yeast and grass. Orange flavours, again the juices and lots of the zest, creating a very nice dry mouthfeel. The bitterness is nicely balanced. Present, but not overly. A very good IPA.

12 oz can, canned on 5/9/17. Pours slightly hazy golden orange with a big fluffy white head that retains well and leaves little lacing.

The aroma is subdued - sweet soapy biscuit malts and slightly metallic hops.

The flavor is sweet fruity grainy malt with a fairly big piney resiny slightly ashy hop finish. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with slightly sharp carbonation.

Overall, a decent IPA that I liked a lot better on tap.

Hands down the best IPA I've ever had. The aroma is a little lacking but beyond that, Its a perfect balance of hops and malt. Perfect pour and mouthfeel. Perfect taste. Not overly hoppy. I'm not saying its the best beer ever. Just the best IPA.

Clear copper/orange pour with a fluffy long lasting white head. Laces till the end. Aroma and flavour is very fruity. Sweet and malty with pineapple, melon, peach and orange. Smooth medium mouthfeel. This is a very crisp and refreshing drink.Think I could drink this by the bucket load any time of the year.

355 ml canned beer. Poured an unclear and light hazy orange-copper coloured IPA with a generous one finger light beige and soapy foamy head that had a very long retention and tons of micro bubbles. Low carbonation. Some lacing. The aroma is fruity, intense riped mangos and resinous-citrussy hops on a solid malty backbone. The flavour is sweety and caramel malts, a basket of juicy fruits, citrus, tangerines, oranges, pineapples, a rouch of dried fruits, nuts and pronounced resinous-piney hops. The mouthfeel is sparkling, thick, sweety ( too ! ) and hoppy bitter. The texture is oily. This medium bodied IPA has a light sticky and bitter piney finish. An attractive nose, a solid palate, well balanced, for short a convincing IPA.
