England’s oldest beer style is the classic brown ale, and this smooth, malty flavor is what inspired the Charleston Brown Ale. Roasted Belgian and Munich Malts are expertly blended with a touch of roasted chocolate malt to yield a balanced flavor that is complicated and interesting, and not too sweet. Charleston Brown has won the “Best Brown Ale in the Southeast” in 2002 at the USA Beer Tasting Championships, and also was awarded “Best Brown Ale” by Beer South in 2001.

So when I was in Savannah, GA and I ordered a Charleston Brown Ale, I figured I was trying a beer from South Carolina. Little did I know that Charleston Brown was brewed in North Carolina....go figure! Anyways, I had this one at Huey's on River Street in Savannah, GA with my dinner.
The beer is poured from the draught and didn't have much going on in the looks department. It was pretty much brown and watery looking with absolutely no head at all. Didn't think much of it and decided to drink it since it had a decent nutty and malty aroma to it. Nothing great though.
Like the aroma, the flavor is decent...nothing great. The beer wasn't as watery as it looked when it was poured and drank fairly well. Mixed up in the flavor were roasted malts, dark sugars, and a hint of hops that left behind a little bitterness on the back end. Nothing great though.
Overall, I think this one is as average a brown ale as you are going to fine. It's not bad and goes nicely with dinner when your other choices are Bud and Miller products. Outside of that though, I doubt I'd pick it up at the store and keep it in my fridge. -

Poured a translucent brown color with an ok head and lacingg that was ok. Aroma on this one was hard to pick up, maybe some toasted malts. The fflavor was an odd liquor type flavor in the front of everything (sorry, I don't know my liquors, nor can I say this was high abv, but boy, it was liquor sweet and sharp). Bitter nuts picked up mid-glass and as it warmed some sweet type candy came out. Too strong of an odd liquor type flavor in this one to be great.

Dark brown, has a nice head with decent retention. Aroma is malty, woody. The flavor is not rich, has more of that woodiness with a little brown sugar. Mild bitterness. Mild sweetness. Boring, but not really a bad beer.

Dark brown color, small head with a malty aroma. Toffee flavor, not very hoppy. Mouthfeel is full. Finish is clean. Aftertaste is malty. Spectacularly unimpressive brown ale. Drinkable and better than BUD.
