This stout beer pays tribute to the Butternuts Brewery's former life as a dairy farm, thus the sexy cow on the can. It's a lighter, more drinkable version of the Stout breed than its heavy, boorish and smelly European sisters. Not too strong, not too viscous (oooh...viscous...creepy). Unlike a true bovine it has a malty, roasty aroma and a dry finish but no tail or teats, and leaves no unsightly cow pies laying around the yard for you to step in. On a personal note, the rich, dark color and bossy character goes beautifully on a crisp, colorful fall day up here in the Butternut Valley. We like to pour one or a few while contemplating nature in all her glory as Summer gives way to Fall and consciousness gives way to blather.

Black with a finger and a half of dense cap that laces the whole glass as one drinks. Sweet aroma with hints of bubble gum and toffee on the pour. The scent blooms to include elements of wood, spice, and a hint of char. The creamy and smokey flavor also shows some spice. Sweet, refreshing, pleasantly light carbonation. A solid offering. Looking forward to having some more.

Courtesy of bluesandbarbq - pours thick with a deep, rich black color and tan head that retains and laces well. Coffee, chocolate and a hint of vanilla to the nose and translating to the flavor as well. A predictable, average feel to the pallette. Nice for dessert. Thanks!

Thinnish near-black pour with a shrinking light beige head that reduces to a ring leaving ample lacing. Nice roasted malt aroma with some black coffee and bittersweet chocolates, slight burning molasses. Mouthfeel is just a bit thin. Taste is just like the nose: roasted malts, coffee, bittersweet chocolates, some molasses - a very drinkable stout.

I was skeptical about a stout from a can, but it delivered some big taste. It pours an opaque black with a good thick khaki head that hangs around for a while lacing on its way down. The aroma is smoky with hints of coffee and burnt chocolate. The beer is a little light and fizzy on the palate but the taste is out of sight. Strong coffee flavors with little bitterness invite you back for another taste. This beer is a good stout, and an excellent canned beer.

Pours a nice opaque sable with a fairly thick beige head that sticks around for a bit. Aroma is like a fine roast coffee, rather smoky and inviting. Flavor is like a cold mocha with coffee and unsweetened chocolate tones and just a hint of molasses. Texture is smooth, just a little tingly and a bit on the thin side, but this is the beer’s weakest aspect. All in all, a decent stout, not the best but still palatable.

A nice gift from Pyuke: Poured a thick black colour with a thin brown line of a head. Aroma was pretty neutral, maybe could have used some time to warm up and breathe. Otherwise some roasted malts faintly on the nose. Taste was very creamy, big and suprisingly well carbonated with a full nutty mouthfeel and chocoaltey flavours. Light enough for the end of summer, but maybe not heavy enough for winter. Good autumnal beer. Thanks Paul!

This poured a black color with a beige head. The aroma contains some chocolate, coffee, and maybe toffee? The flavor is oddly sour with some sour grapes along with chocolate and coffee. Sour stouts suck in my book. This one does as well. Overall not horrid but something is off.

Very dark beer with a pronounced burnt malt aroma. A bit thin body but the burnt roasted coffee flavor made it quite easy to consume more than one. Worth seeking out again and determining if it is as good from the can.
