Bush Ambrée (Scaldis)

Pours an average size foamy bubbly off-white head but dissipates to a thin coating. Has a clear golden amber appearance. Fairly excessive carbonation. Aromas of light toasty and caramel malts. Flavours of barley malts, toasted malts, caramel. Has a bit of a sweet/bitter finish. Astringent mouthfeel. The alcohol is somewhat noticeable but much more once it warms up.

Poured a 2" beige head with decent retention. Body is a cross between golden yellow and amber and held to the light it shows clouding from fine particulates. Smell is really good with malt and caramel. Taste is rich with malt, caramel, and toffee, and it's creamy and sweet. There's a medium-long finish which feels like you just ate a sweet dessert.

Sneaky bottle from the lower depths of my mini fridge. At least 5 years old. Served just a little sweaty. Poured into a baby Duvel tulip. Comes out like syrup. About the same color too. Just a touch of haze. No head, but there's a steady stream of spritz. Smells like a muddling mashup of toffee & a cabernet. Buttery, but not apparently greasy. Potent. Taste slides more towards toffee, with some soft red grape skin cutting into it. Mild leafy bitterness. Maybe some cherry pit. Very, very mellow, but unfortunately, also very, very simple. The oxidation just sort of rolls with it. Carbonation is subtle, but pinches at times. Warming, gentle alcohol.

Single bottle from the SAQ, labelled "Scaldis Ambrée" at 11.8% ABV. Pours a fizzy amber colour with a frothy off-white head that has decent retention and a little lacing. Fruity apple aromas at first with hints of rusty water (from the hop) and butterscotch. The alcohol is present, but very well-hidden, considering the high level of it. Even in the mouthfeel, no burning. Slight warming in the finish. Sweet malt taste, but not overly (which is its strong point here). The apples are still there, but the caramel takes a bit over. The alcohol shows in the aftertaste, but again, no burning. Not a bad, really strong beer.

A bold orange-amber colored beer with a small, one finger, foamy textired, off white head. Settles fairly quickly leaving a large ringlet. Strong nose and tasting. Bold caramel, dark fruitin a strong alcohol bath. Full bodied and creamy.

From Galleries Lafayette, Paris, October 2009. 12% ABV, "The Strongest Belgian Beer" advises the label. Poured a cloudy, dark orange with a smallish white head. Nose was spices, yeast, and alcohol, maybe some dark fruit. Flavour was similar, along with some dark fruit. Noticeable alcohol burn at the finish. Too sweet to drink a lot of, but enjoyable in a helping this size (250ML). Smooth mouthfeel.

Pours a cloudy amber with a lot of sediment floating around the liquid, the foam quickly fades into a ring and a nice web behind. The aroma consists of caramel and stone fruit, with golden raisins underneath. The Taste consists of caramel and stone fruit, up front, with golden raisin and spice cake elements developing by mid-palate; after the swallow, the flavors blend nicely and, despite the sweetness, the beer maintains a somewhat dry, woody aspect that adds balance. The mouthfeel is full bodied with low to moderate carbonation; very little warmth despite the high ABV.

Warning don't even consider having this brew with food! It is best sipped slowly by its self! Very full body, at 12% abv this brew has a healthy alcohol burn that only accentuates the flavor experience. One to have when you have the time to appreciate it.

WOW! This puppy was strong, strong, strong! And it gave me one wallop of a headache to prove it the next day. Nothing like getting real ambitious, but seeing Scaldis on tap at the Sharp Edge Brasserie, and my adventurous side took over. Very nice white head on top of the goldish amber fluid is what you will first notice. The aromas are floral and perfumy. Typical of a strong Belgian. On the buds, the flavors of candy sugar, malt, alcohol, various citrus including sweet apples took over. This is a nice pleasurable drinking experience. Just have a glass of water on standby whilest savoring. Otherwise you may not want to get out of bed the following morning.

Amber-orange body with a dwindling tan head and spotty lace on the glass. Big fruity esters in the aroma with some pear and vanilla accents. Very sturdy feel, a bit too hot for my liking, medium body with an alcohol burn that fades. Earthy and dry, some light malts overpowered by a strong fruity yeast taste. Peaches, pears, oak toffee and vanilla. A strong Belgian that demands ample time.
