May is the month of rebirth and rejuvination. If the Germans ever need a reason to celebrate, this is as good as any. The right brew for the occasion is Maibock, a strong lager that was brewed during the cold of winter. Bock is German for billy goat. At 7%, this one is frisky! Be careful, lest he'll toss you by his horns... Zum Wohl! (to your health).

Yet a other seasonal from Brewsters hope this one is descent. Crystal clear copper body with just a skiff of a off white head when the waitress dropped it off. Aroma is mainly nutty roasted malts with melon and mild pine hops, actually there is a surprisingly large amount of hops in the aroma. Very hopped up beer for the style it’s nowhere near as hoppy as a IPA but for the style there seems to be a lot pine bitter hops. Watery roasted malts with coffee like flavours that finishes bitter and leaves behind a lingering sweetness. I can taste mild alcohol and burnt rubber but not in a bad way. Not a bad beer I think I shall have another.

This years version of the Maibock is a bright honey brown brew with excellent clarity but was served with a dissapointing small white cap that survived as a ring only and left zero lacing. Aroma was lacking the strength of malts that I would have liked, but at least what was there was toasted albeit lightly. Sweetness is also present, a touch of floral and some hop smell too. A hint of alcohol can be found as well. As for the taste, the alcohol flavour hit me first and although it was not offensive, I wish a maltiness would have been my first impression. And there is some malts but not nearly enough. When my brew was fresh and cold a tasty bitterness was present, but when warmer it changes to a slight blah bitterness and a hint of wheat???? Overall, the alcohol is well hidden which was something I had to think about later. Mouthfeel was smooth but undercarbonated and had a light body. Some unappealing bitter aftertoughts.
