Rather than depending on the floral, herbal aspects of traditional hopping, Harry Magill's Spiced Stout explores an alternative to balancing the signature roasted character of a stout. The malt body is a robust mixture of wheat & various specialty malts, offering hints of molasses & maple syrup. Accented by subtle notes of ginger & nutmeg, the beer offers a unique set of aromas. An interesting beer that I had at the Devil's Den in Philly last Friday. The nutmeg and ginger were definitely there. Good for winter drinking to keep you in the holiday spirit.

To me this is brewed in the mold of Our Special Ale which isn’t a bad thing. And it also means it will age well. And it did. A murky brown to almost black apperance. The aroma contains some ginger, cinammon, chocolate, and coffee. The flavor has a spice presence with a chocolate backbone. I get a little bit of grittiness on the palate. SPIT! Overall a nice beer.

12.04.05 12oz bottle at HW open house, I think thanks to cornboy? Pours a cloudy, murky, dark brown with a foamy, thin, tan head. In fact, it’s a rare unattractive stout, how about that? The aroma and flavor are grapey (concorde/jelly/candy) and boozy. Plenty of dry and bitter roast and an astringency that seems to be filling the void where, just perhaps, there was once a pleasant spice. Molasses bitterness as well, but not sweetness. No longer spicy, rather a bit sour, old, and leathery. Still, worth the taste.

Very strong roasted, very much like espresso. The spicing isn''t too much, noticable but not overwhelming. Appearance is good except the head is a tiny bit fizzy. Not up to par with the Expedition or the Kalamazoo stout, but not bad.

Black brew with a creamy tan head. There is something strange going on here. I''m not sure if it''s the ginger or what but something is throwing this brew off.As it warms I''m starting to get the mentholatum that others mentioned. Very odd brew.

Dark black color, small head. Chocolaty aroma. Dark roasted malts. Subtly spiced, with nutmeg and ginger. Earthy and slightly oaky. Full bodied. Good flavor. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is smooth. Aftertaste is slightly bitter. Nice beer.

Deep dark brown to black color, frothy chocilate head and sheets of lace. Nose is toasted malts, caramel, bitter chocolate. The start is roasted malt, the middle full, thick, creamy, rich, the finish is dry, quite hoppy, some what acidic. A very good stout over all, high abv warms the tummy for these cold winter days.
