Belhaven Twisted Thistle IPA takes its name from the humble thistle, an indigenous, spikey-leaved species which thrives in Scotland's wild and beautiful mountain regions and which has become our nations emblem. Twisted Thistle is brewed at 6.1% for the US market and 5.3% for our European customers, a refreshing example of an India Pale Ale from the Master brewers of Belhaven. The blend of cascade and Challenger hops combine to produce an abundance of fresh hope aroma that preludes a bitter-dry taste explosion, perfectly balanced by optic ale malt grist which will have your taste buds tingling.

Part of the 2018 Belhaven Craft Christmas 6-Pack. This clearly a British style IPA with the emphasis on ‘clearly’ as there isn’t a speck of haze in the glass. The beer pours a translucent metallic gold colour with a thin white film for a head. Swirling the beer for a few seconds generates a 1” foamy off-white head. The aroma is grainy malt, some musty hops and some floral hops, and yeast. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with average carbonation. The flavour is grainy malt up front, some acidic tones, and a bitter citrusy hop finish. Hard to detect the citrus in the aroma but it is definitely there on the palate. -

Pours a big foamy bubbly white head that doesn't stay very long and has a fairly clear golden appearance. Some sticky lace does still remain. Aromas of fruits, piney hops. Flavours are also quite fruity, some subtle grassy and pine hop notes. Has a bit of bubble gum like taste in the finish. Medium bodied. Fairly acceptable IPA.

Part of their Merry Craftmas 6-pack. Pours a clean light-amber colour with an off-white head, average retention and good lacing. Aromas are fresh with hops (Cascade, Challenger) at first. Then, some decent caramel malts base. The taste has the hops, but not as strong. Average bitterness, dryness. Not much lingering, but not bad overall. An easy-drinking IPA that is not shocking.

500 ml capped and translucent bottle. Poured in an English tulip pint a light hazy rich golden-amber coloured IPA with a generous two fingers light beige and creamy foamy head that had a very long retention and tons of micro bubbles. Sustained carbonation. Good lacing. The aroma is solid grassy hops, sweety caramel malts, candy sugar and fruity, citrus. The flavour is sweety malts, caramel, candy sugar, grassy hops and flowery notes, violet. The mouthfeel is creamy, quite thin and very smooth. The texture is oily. This medium bodied IPA has a lingering hoppy bitter finish. A too pronounced sweety side is overwhelming a nice hoppy part.

Bottled, now available here in Finland "commonly" too. Dark goldenish and slightly reddish colour, mediumsized foamy beige head. A strong sweetish hoppy aroma (caramel/candyish sweet). Flavour is very pleasantly hoppyish fruity along with some caramel, sweet candyish sugary stuff balancing it up from being a very bitterish IPA. A very pleasant IPA from the British Islands.

500 ml bottle, now available in Norway (Vinmonopolet). The European version is 5.3% ABV, while the US version is 6.1% (the two versions need a split). Clear deep golden colour, moderate head. Very nice hoppy aroma (Cascade and Challenger), hints of toffee too. The flavour has a distinct hoppy bitterness throughout, but the moderate malty base has a tad too much sweetness for my taste, and I also get some "alcoholic" notes, despite only 5.3% ABV. Not very complex, but not bad either. Bitterness lingers in the long aftertaste.
