Polaris Pale Ale is brewed with wild-harvested spruce tips, Québec-grown hops and Ontario wheat. This inspired, tasty beer was brewed by Beau’s to honour all the deserving artists and albums nominated for the 2016 Polaris Music Prize, and offer a tip of the hat to this uniquely Canadian reward for artistic merit. PALE ALE HISTORY & STYLE: The Polaris Music Prize is a not-for-profit organization that annually honours and rewards artists who produce Canadian music albums of distinction. A select panel of music critics judge and award the Prize without regard to musical genre or commercial popularity. TASTING NOTES: Pours a light orange with a frothy white head. The predominantly woodland aroma of spruce also offers subtle notes of citrusy hops. The flavour is mildly peppery and zesty spruce is echoed here too, a medium malt backbone holds it all in place. The finish is clean and snappy. FOOD PAIRINGS: Swordfish or albacore tuna seared with rosemary and grilled apples; braised lamb shanks with herbes de provence; chicken breast with fresh rosemary and cream; cheddar polenta; Avonlea clothbound or a good 3 year old cheddar; Lankaaster from Glengarry or aged Gouda, crepes with apples, ricotta and spruce tip syrup.

Bottle. Colour - orange gold, slight haze, thick off-white head, frothy, good lacing. Aroma - cereal grains, pine/spruce notes, citrus, and floral notes. Mouthfeel - medium bodied, over carbonated. Flavour - a let down considering the aroma. There is a definite imbalance towards the hoppy notes with very little of the malt showing through.

On tap at Arrow and Loon. Pours an average size frothy off-white head and has a hazy golden amber appearance. Thick dirty lacing. Aromas of earthy hops, toffee, resin, bready malts. Flavours are fruity, some bitter type hops, resin, some nice subtle spice notes. Smooth and slick mouthfeel. Excessive carbonation. Not too bad.
