Our Sculpin IPA is a great example of what got us into brewing in the first place. After years of experimenting, we knew hopping an ale at five separate stages would produce something special. The result ended up being this gold-medal winning IPA, whose inspired use of hops creates hints of apricot, peach, mango and lemon flavors, but still packs a bit of a sting, just like a Sculpin fish.

355 ml bottle, Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 7.0%. Deep golden colour, large white head. Aroma of grapefruit and pine. The flavour is distinctly hoppy throughout, like the "normal" Sculpin, but with the grapefruity and piney notes from the hops enhanced by added grapefruit. Good stuff.

After having the regular Sculpin a few weeks back, was nice to find this one at the LCBO in bottles. Pours a lightly-hazed golden colour with a slight orange hue. Big frothy off-white head with good retention and lots of creamy-foamy lacing. Loads of citrus notes from the hops in the nose, especially the grapefruit - in juice and peel. This zest is dominant in the taste with big dryness and bitterness. Wish this was a little juicer with the grapefruit over the peel. Preferred the original version.

Pours clear amber with a frothy and fairly thick eggshell head. Hoppy aroma has a strong grapefruit overtone plus a yeasty hint - and interestingly, a bit of almost honey-like sweetness. Flavor has hoppy, malty, grapefruit, and almost soda-like sweet notes. Sweetness nicely balances the hop bitterness and grapefruit sourness for a well-rounded and distinctive taste. Texture is smooth, not too fizzy or thick, but it goes down well, leaving a hoppy and grapefruit finish. Don’t be a sourpuss - sour fish? - grab a bottle!

About the same overall qualities as the regular Sculpin, but with some added citrus from the grapefruit. Thinking some more bitter in there too. Had this on tap at a hot dog place/bar, so may have to sample again if I see it in bottles. One of my favorite IPAs, so nice to see some variations.

12 oz bottle. Pours clear golden orange with a huge creamy white head that retains well and laces the glass some.
The aroma is grapefruit and piney hops with a little resin.
The flavor is sweet bready malts with some grapefruit and bitter resiny piney hops in the finish. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with smooth carbonation.
Overall, nice piney resiny IPA. The grapefruit is more subdued than expected. -

Pours a clear golden color witha small foamy head that leaves some clinging lacing. Aromas of grapefruit, lemon, fresh cut flower, pine and sweet malt. The grapefruit leads the flavor parade, followed by lemon, pine, sweet malt and a hint of spice. A pleasant drying on the tongue on the finish. Light and refreshing. An interesting take on an IPA. This could become my new summer beer. Ballast Point does it again. Recommended.

I had this fresh out of the tap at the Barrel Chest in Roanoke, VA. This beer was Sculpin with more grapefruit - which is hard to imagine. Very bright beer - super citrusy. A wonderful beer. I bought two bottles to try a full 12 ozs to see if the beer changes as it warms in the glass.

Clear golden pour with a Very thin head. More pine aroma than grapefruit. Good strong hoppy flavour with grapefruit dominating. It also tastes of lemon, pine, grass a hint of melon with just a tad of sweetness. Very long finish. Good beer but I don't think i could chuggle too many in one session.

Pours a bright, clear golden yellow color with a small foamy white head that reduces to a thin film, decent patchy lace left behind. Aromas of grapefruit (of course), also picking up some grass, orange pulp, passion fruit, peach & guava. Flavor is slightly sweet, the grapefruit takes center stages but isnt as overwhelming as you would think. Complimentary notes of lemon zest, fresh grass, mango, passion fruit, mint leaves & leafy hops. Just a hint of bready malt rounds it out with more grapefruit on the finish. Medium body and long drying finish. Magnificent flavors and aromas, a must try.

Mmmm...ypu still get a little of the tropical roller coaster ride that is Sculpin, just with the biggest climb being the grapefruit. We happened to have this on cask, which mutes the bitterness a little, but oh...not the flavor. Wonderful beer. I understand why BP is my wife's favorite brewer.
