In October of 2004, we released the first beer in our series of Barrel Aged beers, Allagash Curieux. To make the Curieux (French for "curious"), we age our Tripel Ale in Jim Beam barrels for 8 weeks in our warm room. During the aging process in bourbon barrels, the beer is totally transformed, and many new flavors and aromas develop. Most notably, the beer picks up soft coconut and vanilla characteristics...and also a hint of bourbon flavor! We have introduced the Curieux at a few tastings on draft, but it is primarily available in 750ml bottles.

Barrel aged caught my attention. Would have preferred a darker beer, and this had a white, frothy head on top...Almost too much foam, until I realized that it was rapidly condensing. A little thin of a mouth feel for what I was expecting, and pricey, too. I think I will need to try this one again to be sure!

I am not a fan of the constant barrel aging of beer in hard liquor barrels. This beer pours a straw gold, with a weak off-white rocky cap. Within seconds the cap is reduced to little islands of foam on the surface. The Jim Beam is strong in this one, and I’ve tried several vintages. Too much JB in the aroma and too much JB in the taste. Again, maybe some people get it, I don’t. If I want bourbon, I’ll grab myself a bourbon. If I want beer, I expect a beer.

Bottle from the brewery, bottled on 03/07/18 (rated April 2018). Pours a hazy light-golden colour with a frothy white head, good retention and patchy lace. Citrus aromas going on the apple-side after a while, blended with the alcohol and Belgian yeast. Hints of grassiness and dark fruits from the bourbon oak barrels. The bourbon does show more in the taste, but not too rich to make it hard to drink. Well-balanced with the rest of the strong Tripel, giving it some raisins and brown sugar notes. A light warming mouthfeel, but goes down very smoothly. Quite nice all-around.

Hazed orange pour with lively carbonation and little lacing. Banana forward aromas with notes of bubblegum and hay. Thin mouthfeel and lively carbonation up the drink ability for a brew at 11 percent. Bananas and clove up front finish with a strong note of bourbon - oak and vanilla with a touch of caramel. A bit thin for barrel aging but it doesn't hurt the beer. Usually beers with lower malt bills can't withstand a rest in a barrel but the base beer is surely enough to handle it.

A golden color with a large white head. Aroma contains some lemons, grass, and whiskey. The flavor contains some strong lemon peel, spices, and good ol jim beam. This beer is too light for barrel aging IMO and especially with discount bourbon. Very strong boozy finish. This is what happens when Belgium meets Kentucky ummm what?

Thank you Gully. (December 2008 bottle) Dark honey brown with a good cap. The smell is soooooooooooooooooo good, very different and not what I expected. Wheat, pineapple, pinna colada, vanilla. Yeast, and not a trace of the alcohol. Taste is spectacular!!! Dam being the DD today I only get half a glass I HATE YOU ALL SO MUCH!!!! I think this is my first “liquor aged” triple and wow does it work, you taste all the Belgium spices and wheat and yeast and the addition of the bourbon aging does awesome things to this. The bourbon gives this beer an awesome sweet vanilla character, it’s like drinking a rye and coke but none of the liquor heat shows up. More pineapple, hints of fresh bread a touch of wood but it’s a struggle to taste that. Lemon and spice are showing up now at the end of my tiny half-filled glass. So awesome.

I was very curious about a beer called curieux, and now that I've tried it, I'm curious no longer. A beautiful dark gold pour with a thick white head that wafts out a nice malty aroma and a touch of alcohol soaked wood and bourbon. The flavour is a complex assortment of yeast, maly, and pepper. Very nice.

Medium golden body with a big collapsing white head and thick strands of lacing. Aroma is yeasty with a good earthy quality backed by hints of lemon, flowers and wood. Smoothly blended, rich and filling with a faint trace of alcohol. Starts sweet and finishes with a hearty kiss of whiskey. Fermented fruits with a citrus backdrop followed by light bread and a mild nuttiness. Plenty of Belgian yeast flavors to keep this in check. Wonderful drink, and it was in great form.

2008? pours with a nice, white, fluffy head. typical belgian aroma, but there is something more. can't taste the oak, but it's a very melow, yet very complex nose and flavor. I liked it quite a bit. Others were expecting more for the price. 2011 release more bourbon and oak, a little sweeter...still awesome.
