126 Michelob Bavarian Style Wheat United States Hefeweizen 3.7

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Thanks to Florian Kuplent (AB's Head Research Brewer) for sharing this with the St. Louis Brews. Poured bright and golden hazy yellow with a half inch of foam. Citrusy aromatics accompnay the expected clove, banana, vanilla and wheaty graininess. The use of some cascades in the finish brightens it up without causing distractions. The flavors well reflect the aroma with minimal bitterness. A well made hefe with a slight perk of citrus.

127 Abbaye des Rocs Brune Belgium Belgian Strong Ale 2.8

Aroma: 5 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 6

Poured a dark copper with lots of fluffy, eggshell head however there was plenty of precipitate in the glass and it was rather flaky, not particulate like most sediment. Smelled of green apples, caramel, raisins and coffee. There was some odd astringency in the flavor that didn't expecially interfere with the mouthfeel. It went beyond the nominal dryness for most Belgians. Unfortunately this one was just out of whack and I cannot reccomend it highly on this tasting.

128 Avery The Reverend United States Abbey Quadrupel 2.8

Aroma: 4 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

Well, I dont know about this being a quad, but its a nice Belgian Strong. Poured copper with a small eggshell foam cap which faded quickly. Malt, caramel, fruits, banana, spice and vanilla are all there but rather on the weak side. Nice, but lacking the character of most dark strongs, including the Chimay we had beforehand which overshadowed this one. Oh, and review number 700.

129 Gouden Carolus Classic Belgium Belgian Strong Ale 4.0

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Served as a sample at the Lukas Liquors Saturday beer tasting. Aromatic fruits, pineapple, mango and banana with very mild spice. Bright gold with small eggshell foam cap, pilsner-eque mouthfeel with more malt and soft carbonation. Maltiness, fruit and spicy hops across the tongue. Very nice beer.

130 Highland Tasgall Ale United States Scottish Ale 3.7

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

A very nice surprise from another friend in the homebrew club. Slightly smoky and scotch ale yeast character mingle with loads of malt in the aroma, deeper brown with a touch of foam. Bigger, malty mouthfeel, soft but slightly minerally. Big and malty with excellecnt Scotch ale character. This would make a great winter warmer.

131 New Holland Mad Hatter Ale United States IPA 3.5

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Another nice, above average AIPA, to be sure. Seemingly inspired by Two Hearted, but stripped down. Floral hoppy aroma, golden, sparkling body, mild cap of foam, but thin and carbonic across my palate. Nice and hoppy, mild malt flavor. All-in-all its quite nice.

132 Schlafly Special Release Pumpkin Ale United States Spiced Beer 3.7

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

What an effort for a first/only offering. The spices compliment the malty/sweet flavors of barley and pumpkin. Ginger adds a nice edge and cuts through the cinnimon which tends to linger for me. Smells like spiced pumpkin beer moreso than 'pumpkin pie in a glass', for a change. Thinner mouthfeel, and lacking a nice stand of head, but the flavor more than makes up for it. Very nice.

133 New Belgium Saison United States Saison 2.8

Aroma: 5 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 6

Well, I have a couple of problems with this one. While its not bad, it lacks what I like in a Saison. It has the peppery spiciness from the yeast and a nice malt profile, however, the grain profile does lack the diversity one expects, also, where are the hops? It seems like the better examples of the style can show a nice hop character, this does not. Also the filtration bothers me, there's no way any true Saison can be this clear. Lagering is fine, but where's the bottle conditioning for aging? Where's the real character. Its good, but not what I need when I reach for a Saison.

134 He'Brew Bittersweet Lennys R.I.P.A. United States Imperial IPA 4.5

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9

I'll quote myself "What's just as amazing as the fact that this is an Imperial Rye India Pale Ale, and the fact that its great, is that fact that I didn't have to brew it myself!" Rich aroma, thick with hops, rye and caramelly malts. Copper amber color with a very nice stand of thick head. Rich rye mouthfeel, yet not cloying or overbearing, very nice. The flavor is full of rye, resinous hops, cara-malts, raisins/ansise, pine, citrus and glory. Wow, this is awesome.

135 Lagunitas India Pale Ale United States IPA 3.3

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 6

So, where's the hop aroma? The flavor and bitterness are there, however the aroma is there but quite lacking. Looks nice, light copper with a bit'o'head. Nice hop flavor and balanced with an indistinct malt profile. Well, there you have it.

136 Ettaler Curator Germany Doppelbock 3.3

Aroma: 5 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Bonus point or two for clocking in at 9.0% with zero alcoholic heat. Dark with almost no head and low carbonation, head is weak, carbonation is fine. Silky smooth in the mouth, coating, but not lingering. Rich malt with hint of chocolate but some distracting soy sauce like flavors. Quite nice.

137 He'Brew Genesis 10:10 United States English Barleywine 3.4

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 7

What an odd offering. This would make a nice, fruity English Strong. Well attenuted an thinner bodied, but not very hot on the alcohol and copper red color. Some altbier like maltiness, lower hopping (like an english strong) with the pomegranate fruitiness, but with less acidity...how'd that happen? Anyway, I liked the flavor, but it just couldn't deliver the whole package.

138 Grand Teton Bitch Creek ESB United States Extra Special Bitter 3.8

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Well, isn't this dandy. Copper brown-ish. Nice toasty and caramelly malt upfront with a nicely blended bitterness and hop flavor. One pleasant ESB, I'd like another...hint, hint.

139 Grand Teton Sweetgrass India Pale Ale United States IPA 3.1

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 5 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

A nice, well rounded IPA, with some APA and ESB character in the malt. Nice and hoppy nose, some biscuit like flavors and toast. Some Simcoe/Cascade like notes, but a bit different...something English in there, too? A bit above average and nice, but not particularly memorable.

140 Avery Hog Heaven United States American Barleywine 3.3

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 7

As its been said, 'Barleywines, even when they're bad, they're still good'. Well, this wasn't bad, but it didn't live up to the billing. This seemed rahter two dimensional to me, some Columbus hopping (did they dry hop too cold? I think its a possibility) and altbier-esque thin maltiness. The flavors were nice, but not melded or rich enough for an American BW. The bitterness was there, but not the truly thick, juicy hop flavor, and the big, sweet malt was attenuated out. More of an American Strong Ale, still nice.

141 Tucher Brau Bajuvator Doppelbock Germany Doppelbock 4.0

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 8

What a pleasant suprise! Poured deep copper/brown and clear with a small cap of head that faded off. Wonderful aroma with loads of caramelly malts, hints of wood and vanilla, chocolate and a hint of raisins and dark fruit...but I might have imagined those. Creamy, medium bodied mouthfeel, perfectly balanced attenuation. The flavor simply knocks thy socks offeth, and at 7% or so, it has the flavor punch without the alcohol kick that can spoil many others. A most excellent offering. Thanks to Jake at 33 Wine Shop.

142 Breckenridge Vanilla Porter United States Spiced Beer 3.8

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

A pleasant surprise, here. I never had much doubt, but this is one is rather special. Deep and dark brown with a white cap head. Chocolate malt, malty sweetness without, yet a tad dry, low astringency, large vanilla flavor, but not overpowering. A great dessert beer, it would be fantastic with strawberry chocolate pie.

143 75th Street Whiskey Barrel Muddy Mo Stout United States Dry Stout 3.4

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

I had one of the last pints from the firkin this past weekend. The pour was deep and dark brown with a fading, creamy head, once the glass was nearly done a thick layer of yeast had settled to the bottom...nice. It smelled like whiskey, wood, chocolate, vanilla and, well, stout, quite pleasant. The in the mouth it became quite puckeringly dry, between the woody astringincy and warmer serving temperature it was rather chalky in texture. The flavor delivered on the aromatics, however and it was a very different, yet satisfying take on barrel aging.

144 Chaucers Mead United States Mead 3.3

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 6

I had this following an O'Fallon Pumpkin Ale at the KC Renaissance Festival, very appropriate. Smelled heavily floral with a light sweetness and citrus. The hue was like a darker chardonnay. Filling, but not memorable mouthfeel. The flavor was full of flowery, herbal and mild citric notes, however, they all were vastly outmuscled by the huge, upfront sweetness. I don't know enough about mead to tell if it was backsweetened or underattenuated, however, it was tooth-rottingly sweet and just too much.

145 Avery Thirteen United States Weizenbock 3.0

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 6

Hmm...well, I wanted to like this. But it was just outright too bland. While the high malt content should mute the weizen character a bit, it shouldn't be blunted to this point. It became rather chalky and two dimensional in flavor halfway down the glass. Chocolate and malt, which aren't bad, dominated, but I really wanted some more banana and clove, plus a bit of wheat tang, but little was to be found. An enjoyable beer, but not expressive.

146 Lagunitas Maximus United States Imperial IPA 3.2

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

I'm a little confused by the Imperial IPA monkier, though much better than their standard issue IPA, this is really more of an American Strong Ale or Double Pale Ale or something. Maximus lacks the massive hop punch necessary and the alcohol whallop to be in the class. It is, however, still a tasty brew. Nice juicy, citrusy hops and caramelly malt play over any noticible yeast character. Copper body and thin head. Smooth mouthfeel and not too much carbonation. Nice, but not where it needs to be.

147 Square One Single Malt Scotch Ale United States Scottish Ale 4.2

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9

A very impressive ale from a brewery that continues to impress with each new beverage. Lightly smokey, very malty and sweet but not even close to cloying. For being a big beer (this has to be over 8% without much trouble) yet is extremely smooth. Lower carbonation, small cap of head over an earthy brown, slightly hazy pour for just the right effect. Well done.

What a pleasant surprise! I went in for a growler of the California Common and had a taste of this, and it is the hammer! At over 12%abv and silky smooth. Floral and blance between spice and fruit works very nicely with the light but flavorful malt background. Very well balanced and I'll be back for more.

149 Victory HopDevil United States IPA 2.8

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 4 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 6

I just can't really get behind this as an AIPA, it falls flat compared to many other stand out examples. More of an American red ale, I guess. Lacking malt complexity and hop character on all fronts. The bitterness is within range, but where is resiny mouthfeel and thick hop aroma? Not there, not in any of the six I had. Oh well, its still an OK beer, but a huge let down from what I was expecting.

150 Founders Centennial IPA United States IPA 3.6

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

The aroma was of tropical fruits and light, sweet malt, but just plain weak and watered down. Luckily, the beer was not, very rich and flavorful. Golden nectar with protein haze (hops?) and rich hop flavor, just plain juicy with resin and sweet malt. A very enjoyable IPA but not on the angelic level of some others.
