176 Breckenridge 471 Small Batch Mighty Brown United States Strong Ale 2.9

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 5 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 5

Well, as some of you know I've experimented with the Imperial Brown concept, and, really it can be so, so much more than this. Don't get me wrong, this is a nice brew, but between mine and a friend's this just doesn't measure up. Still, nice chocolately and caramel notes. Complimenting roast and hop bitterness. Malt flavor in toffee flavors, almost no hop flavor. I really needs a couple more IBUs to balance. This would pair great with a chocolate espresso cake or something. However, this new style has room for vast improvement over this example.

177 Samuel Adams Traditional Ginger Honey Ale United States Spiced Beer 3.6

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

A very nice ginger beer. I hadn't had one at all until two months ago, and suddenly I've had three. Well balanced and nothing really dominates, like the majority of Sam Adams products. Well used ginger and citric zest. Hazy yellow body, nice head retention and lace. Smells quite promising and delivers. Clean, slightly sweet finish. A good summer quencher.

178 Yuengling Porter United States Porter 4.0

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Thanks to blksabbath from the GreenBoard for this brew. This is exactly what I had in mind for an Industrial Revolution era porter...bottom fermented, anyway. Chocolaty, roasty goodness with a very clean finish due to the yeast. The only distraction and detraction is a hint of metallic tang. However, I think that was from miscare rather than faulty brewing, so I'll give it the benefit of the doubt. A very fine porter that I'd love to drink again.

179 Allagash Curieux United States Belgian Strong Ale 4.5

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 10 | Overall: 9

This is one of those definitive beer experiences that totally changes youre perception of what beer can be...even as you close in on 700 reviews. Wow, simply divine. Whiskey oak and vanilla flavors compliment the spicy vanilla/trappist-esque trippel like flavors for a very rich yet devastatingly drinkable brew. The 11%abv is very well masked for a lighter bodied beer. The balance is uncanny. Simply remarkable.

180 Point Cascade Pale Ale United States American Pale Ale 3.5

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Hmm...SNPA light? Almost. I like the full cascade character, but did they really use Munich malt? I'd say not enough. Kinda thin in the malt and less hop aroma and flavor that I'd like, but a sufficient punch of hop bitterness. Good, but not remarkable.

181 Kulmbacher Eisbock Germany Eisbock 4.0

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Enchanting. A warming and comforting dark lager. Rich maltiness creates illusions of caramel covered dates and chocolately raisins, but with a way of really playing down the fruits and with an impeccable smoothness, far smoother than all the best of the well cellared English Barleywines. Quite nice.

182 New Belgium Mothership Wit United States Witbier 3.2

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 6

A nice, but unmemorable witbier from Colorado. Spicy and quite fruity in the nose and mouth. Subtle, quenching bitterness sharpened up by the noticeable coriander and small citrus kick. Smallish head...for a wit...subtle Belgian lace and a thinner mouthfeel than I like. Worth a drink.

183 Kaltenberg Konig Ludwig Weiss Germany Hefeweizen 2.8

Aroma: 5 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

Nothing disagreeable here, but I expect more forthright flavor and creamy wheat loaded mouthfeel from a German hefe. Smells nice but thin, banana and clove, a hint of vanilla and thankfully no bubblegum. Thinner head, barely hazy body.

184 Leinenkugel Sunset Wheat United States Witbier 2.0

Aroma: 5 | Appearance: 3 | Mouthfeel: 4 | Flavor: 4 | Overall: 4

Sorry, Kinger, I just don't see it in this one. Its not bad, but its not terribly special. Smells and tastes mostly like blueberry flavored pancake batter...I know its weird, but that was the main flavor I got out it. Small head that collapsed after a bit. Haze and light color, of course. Just that weird flavor that emerged and took over kinda ruined this one for me. RERATE: After having this a couple more times (my friends can't seem to get enough of this one...what the hell?) I thought it was time for a revisit. I stand by the original blueberry pancake batter assessment, but I'd also like throw out there stuff like Froot Loops and Fruity Pebbles, Skittles and the like. Artificial flavors and lager yeast do not a Belgian White make.

185 Square One Dunkel Weizen United States Dunkel Weizen 2.9

Aroma: 3 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 6

Poured extremely cloudy (even for a Bavarian wheat) and with no head nor lace, nice deep brown, though. Smelled of clove, banana, vanilla and chocolate, like a small dessert. Taste delivered on the aroma's promises, no bubble gum, luckily. Could use more carbonation and more time to settle out, but the flavor is spot on.

186 Rodenbach Grand Cru Belgium Flanders Red 4.3

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9

Now the only time I've had this beer so far was on National Homebrew Day 2006...we had it at the 12 noon toast...and it was the first commercial beer of the day, but what a memorable one! and what a memorable tasting! Fanastically balanced, fruity, sour and malty aroma. Flawlessly balancing bitterness, rich flavors reflected from the aroma. Bing cherries, tart and black raspberries, rich maltiness (like a doppelbock) but not bogged down or cloying. All perked up by nice carbonation that is far from obnoxious. Wow, what an adventure!

187 Grimbergen Double Belgium Abbey Dubbel 3.0

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

Had this at Erato, a nice little wine bar with some good beer to be had. Served too cold, which I mentioned nicely, but I let it warm and poured in the rest of the bottle roughly into the goblet to toss up a nice head on it. Rather unremarkable aroma, even after it warmed. Some mild fruit and sugary alcohol. Tiny hints of spice in the flavor to back up the aroma. Not nearly as interesting as most other doubles/dubbles out there. Oh well.

188 Bare Knuckle United States Dry Stout 1.6

Aroma: 4 | Appearance: 4 | Mouthfeel: 3 | Flavor: 2 | Overall: 3

Whoa there kids...don't order this...its not worth it. Tastes like watered down Guinness clone and looks like it, too. I've never seen a stout that looked so...filtered in my life. Ruby red with a creamy little fake nitrogen head. And astringent bitterness from the grains...that's all, folks.

189 Michelob Ultra Amber United States Pale Lager 1.0

Aroma: 2 | Appearance: 2 | Mouthfeel: 2 | Flavor: 2 | Overall: 2

Amber? My arse it is. It looks like they took one of their pale lagers and threw in some black patent or sinamar to get the SRM up over 6 or so. Awful, watery mouthfeel and flavor. Carbonation was about the only flavor I got. Don't waste your time. I had some of a friend's free sample at the brewery and it still wasn't worth the effort.

190 Belhaven Twisted Thistle IPA (US Version) United Kingdom IPA 3.1

Aroma: 3 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

A unique IPA in a landscape of copycats and uninspired hop bombs this is a rather interesting offering. The Scottish yeast adds an unexpected element to an IPA from across the pond, as do the Cascades, they combined for an illusion of columbus hops and with that Scottish smoke note. Very interesting. Toasty malt, but zero head or lace. A nice, offbeat IPA, quite enjoyable.

191 Morgan Street Walks With Deer Graham Cracker Porter United States Porter 3.8

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 7

Morgan Street's Brewmaster, Marc Gottfried's tribute beer to a fallen friend, Darrell 'Walks With Deer' Cox, and a fine tribute it is. Big bonus points for creativity, since it works. Almost a liquid s'more, a marshmellow would be at home in this brew. Some diacetyl, a result likely from the yeast, but knocked up by the graham cracker extract. Vanilla and smooth butterscotch with chocolate and hints of coffee. Pours deep, dark brown, nearly black with a dark khaki head that hangs around. A fine dessert brew.

192 Beach Bum Blonde Ale United States Blonde Ale 2.0

Aroma: 4 | Appearance: 4 | Mouthfeel: 4 | Flavor: 4 | Overall: 4

A blonde ale lacking in character that I didn't care for, to be blunt and honest. Thin mouthfeel and overcarbonated, too prickly, even when warmed a bit. Bright and clear gold, zero head or lace. Flat maltiness and barely there bitterness. I really expected more.

193 Square One Belgium Wit United States Witbier 3.4

Aroma: 5 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 7

Smells of spicy yeast, soft wheaty breadiness, orange fruitiness and slight ginger. None of the characteristic fluffy head. I know the pressure for the usual carbonation can be difficult on draft, but I still expected some of that fluffy head. Soft and slightly coating in the mouth. Subtle and satisfying, a nice summer brew. The ginger accents both the yeast-produced spiciness and the orange without being obnoxious, however, it should be lowered just a bit as it contributed some bitterness, I believe. Well played, Square One, a half step out of line with most Wits...a very Belgian thing to do.

194 Square One ESB (Extra Special Bitter) United States Extra Special Bitter 2.9

Aroma: 5 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

Toasty, biscutiy malts make up the aroma, but its far from aromatic. Pretty clear goldenrod with zero head or lace. Thin mouthfeel with too much carbonation for the style. Too dry and lacking hop flavor, but with a wonderful, firm bitterness. Lacking but not wholly unpleasant.

195 OFallon Summer Brew United States American Pale Ale 3.8

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Smells of toasty malt and crips cascades. Well formed head that hangs around. Light and carbonated mouthfeel with well balanced bitterness that finishes dry. Toasty and bready malt balaced by nice cascade style grapefruit bitterness. A dry and refreshing summer APA. Light bodied and quenching. Less is more with this beer.

196 Bells Cherry Stout United States Fruit Stout 3.9

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Dry for a sweet stout. Now that I'm done complaining, on to the positives. Smells of roast, wood (tannins?), dark/tart cherries, coffee, cocoa and fruit. Poured deep black with a small cap of deep brown head that settled in, some lace and legs. Cherries came through in the middle of mouth, but played backup to the beer, nicely done. The woodiness continues with the roast and other expected notes, I would have like some more forward hop flavor, though (how 'bout some EKGs, anyone?). Still an excellent brew, I've got four in the cellar to see how they change.

197 Arcadia IPA United States IPA 3.7

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 8

What can I say? I drank the whole six pack in a day...one damn day! Full, floral and citric-honey-like nose with very light caramel. Toasty malt in the mouth with a thinner hop flavor than expected, but a nice hefty kick of bitterness in the finish (chinooks/columbus for bittering?). A nice AIPA.

198 New Albanian Hoptimus United States Imperial IPA 4.2

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9

A very nice DIPA on tap at MicroFest. Huge caramelly sweetness and massively juicy hop presence. Large in every sense, this beer pours mildly hazy with sticky, hopppy head with lace that won't quit even when the deep golden body fades.

199 New Albanian Cone Smoker United States Rauchbier 2.7

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 5 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 4 | Overall: 4

Well, the warm ferment or something else took this to really weird territory. Between the smoke, warm ferment, over hopping and either choloramines/cholrine and/or mild infection this beer is just rather...well...odd.

200 75th Street Alpha Male Pale Ale United States American Pale Ale 4.0

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Decidedly in the AIPA area or higher. Dry hopped in the keg this pour came with a Lulupin gland floating the glass. Gloriously hoppy, floral, citric and spicy. Like CJ's JPA hopped up. Malty backing sticky lace. Lingering bitterness inviting another sip. Tasty stuff, here.
