26 Alandale Platinum Blonde Lager United States Pale Lager 3.6

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Decidedly better than your run of the mill Pale Lager. Softly malty aroma, no off aromas like DMS or diacetyl. Light straw pour, thin clings of lace. Soft carbonation in the mouth. Mildly grainy, tinge of hops, nice and refreshing, a good effort for an underwhelming style.

27 Alandale Pilsner United States Bohemian / Czech Pilsener 3.5

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Another entirely decent offering from Alandale, their step mashing regiment works well for this dry, balanced, Pilsner. Hoppy and grainy, golden, small head and lacing, a good quencher.

28 Three Floyds Robert The Bruce Scottish Ale United States Scottish Ale 3.8

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Review #800, a nice offering from Three Floyds. Richly malty aroma, not too sweet. Brown and a bit hazy, head collapses in seconds. Medium mouthfeel, low carbonation, kinda nice. Very malty, malliard product rich. A nice 100-ish shilling brew.

29 Alandale Oatmeal Stout United States Oatmeal Stout 3.5

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Probably more of a sweet oatmeal porter, but still a pretty good brew. Chocolately roasty notes, slightly caramelly, slightly sugary sweetness, some earthy hops, nice.

30 Alandale Doppelbock Lager United States Doppelbock 3.6

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

A pretty good Doppelbock, nice and malty, some head retention, very clean and clear brown body, balanced maltiness, well done, I'll be having this again.

31 New Belgium Springboard Ale United States Belgian Ale 2.3

Aroma: 5 | Appearance: 5 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 4 | Overall: 4

Swing...and a miss. Lightly Belgian-esque aroma, some odd spicing/herbage. Pours relatively clear and light gold, tiny foam. Thin and watery mouthfeel. Medicinal herbs and phenolics. Uninspiring and not well integrated. Can we have Biere de Mars back, please?

32 Alandale American Wheat Ale United States American Wheat 3.0

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

Its a good American Wheat, but, I'm spoiled. With O'Fallon and Boulevard so close and Schlafly (!??) plus all the great HB'd American Wheats this is just so below par around here. Too light mouthfeel, no distinct hop or malt character, although no really apparent flaws despite the lack of character.

33 Alandale American IPA United States IPA 3.2

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 6

More of an APA than an AIPA, but a nice American Ale, nonetheless. Nice floral and citrusy hoppiness, mildly caramel malt to back, but an extremely simple AIPA that does not make up in subtlety what it expresses in intent. Its no O'Fallon 5 Day IPA in that respect, and it doesn't have the fruitiness to compete with other standouts in the category.

34 Alandale Amber Ale United States Amber Ale 3.0

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

A slightly caramelly and citrusy Amber Ale, but pretty low. Watery mouthfeel and flavor, yet the elements are there. A longer boil or higher mash in addition to the somewhat appropriate mash with a bit more attention to detail could make a very nice ABA, yet as it stands, this does not stand out.

35 Green Valley Wild Hop Lager United States Pale Lager 2.5

Aroma: 5 | Appearance: 5 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 5

I had this on tour at the brewery during the big St. Louis Power outage 'round Thanksgiving. Far better than Bud, but I must admit, Willamette is very strange choice for an American Lager, why not go with Sterling or Liberty or even anything else! Oddly, it kinda works, its earthy and hoppy, yet clean and crisp, but I've had so many better CAPs in my day.

36 Schlafly Special Release Irish Extra Stout United States Foreign / Extra Stout 4.0

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

A purposeful offering from Schlafly. Few FESs I've had have real purpose. Simply being a larger stout, while this one comes across as distincly Irish, it holds the dry, minerally character of an Irish Stout, even as it encroaches on RIS territory. Roasty, mild coffee and cocoa flavors, more molasses than caramel/toffee like in an RIS. Malty and big, but still dry, not hot with alchol, well conditioned. I've got a few of these tucked away in my cellar and a few more stashed for Noogfest. Another nice brew from the brewery down the road.

37 Square One Double Red United States IPA 4.0

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

English hoppy aroma, some caramelly malt. Amber colored, small stand of foam and adequate lacing. Bitter and hoppy, yet smooth and balanced. A nice rendition of a classic IPA.

38 EKU 28 Germany Eisbock 2.2

Aroma: 5 | Appearance: 4 | Mouthfeel: 4 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 4

I'll preface this by noting that this is not a bad beer, just not up the standard for Doppelbocks/Eisbocks. The malt flavor and aroma was flat and one dimensional. Not as rich and full as many others, the alcohol is far too hot compared to how mellow many are, along with this the mouthfeel isn't as full and chewy as it could be, however, its still a fun ride.

39 Yarpivo Porter Russia Baltic Porter 3.8

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 7

Another great Baltic/Carnegie Porter here. All the way from Russia, shared by friends at a homebrewers chili cookoff. Heavy on the sherry notes, subdued chocolate, very smooth, nice oxidation. The sample was obviously quite old, but has transformed into something memorable. Quite nice.

40 Trader Joe's Vintage Ale 2006 Canada Abbey Dubbel 3.4

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Better than the bland 2005 version, however a blend between the two would likely be better than either. Kinda harsh on the spicy phenolics, and with higher carbonation. Brown and bubbly, clear-ish, just a bit of haze. Not bad, but I have such high expectation from Unibroue...

41 St. Bernardus Abt 12 Special Edition (60th Anniversary) Belgium Abbey Quadrupel 4.0

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Banana and phenolicly spicy aroma, with some backing dark, dried fruits. Light brown brew with a very bubbly, big head. A full, but refreshing mouthfeel, however a bit much too carbonation, even for a quad. Fruity, caramelly flavors, signatures of the style, really. However, the hop bitterness was bit out of whack when I had this. Some time should serve this very well, and lots of time sure wouldn't hurt either...I'll evaluate again in a few years...

42 OFallon Whiskey Barrel Aged Smoked Porter United States Smoked Ale 4.3

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9

Pours with a blast of an aroma for an aged beer, hardwood smoke, coffee, cocoa, vanilla, wood, some mild oxidation (the good kind) and malt. Dark brown, very dark, small stand of head. Smooth, very smooth in the mouth and soft carbonations. I would like a bit more CO2 prickle...but honestly, I'm not complaining. Rich and balanced flavor, complimenting the aromatics and taking their lead perfectly. An excellent variation on a personal favorite. I was hesitant about this being in the wood for a year, but I must say, its done quite nicely for itself. Thanks, O'Fallon. EDIT: I had a taste of the new batch out of a Buffalo Trace Barrel...holy crap, if they bottle this at the right time, it has the potential to be something really phenomenal...even then it was excellent...I'll wait to update my numbers until the new release hits the shelves.

43 Surly Furious United States IPA 4.0

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Another great sample from Dave at O'Fallon. Sweetly hoppy aroma, smelly like Crystal and Columbus, for sure, resinous and green. Copper pour with eggshell foam, and a medium, but quenching mouthfeel. Balanced hoppy flavor with a very nice malt backing, I doubt the 100IBUs, but if so...its well played. Take a bunch to the beach, and only come back for more. Long live good beer in cans!

44 Surly Bender United States Brown Ale 4.0

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Cool, a can! With great beer in it! Man, this is a really nice brown ale, the only one better at the party was the one I brought...hehe. But seriously, the chocolately-citrusy aroma with caramel and nutty noted, dark brown body and khaki head, silky smooth mouthfeel and balanced flavor put this near the top. Throw a few in your cooler and head to the park, this stuff is good.

45 Allagash Tripel Reserve United States Abbey Tripel 4.0

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

A very nice Tripel that I picked up several months ago in Dallas, TX. Enjoyed a few weeks ago, before Christmas. This was a cleaner Belgian Golden Strong Ale, but still phenolic and mildly fruity. Clean and crisp malt flavors, mildly spicy hops and balancing bitterness. Well rounded and quite nice.

46 Schlafly Eisbock United States Eisbock 4.0

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

I had this at a couple of festivals and debated adding it to the database since its a festival only offering and not for sale...but what the hell...right? An incredibly rich malty aroma, melanoidins, low amounts of caramel, a bit of coffee/cocoa-ish aromas. Deep dark brown, small bit of foam. Smooth and full mouthfeel, warming but not burning. Flavors reflect the aromatics, especially the amazing maltiness here. Quite a special offering here.

47 Saison Imperiale Belgium Saison 3.4

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Malty and mildly fruity and spicy aroma, but not as jump out of the glass aggressively aromatic as some Saisons ring in with me. Light khaki body and wisp of foam. Lively carbonation and lighter mouthfeel at first, more coating as it warms. Clean malty flavors highlighted by mild fruitness and spicy hop presence. Really more of a Biere de Garde to me, which is not a bad thing, however, as a Saison, it lacks the funk. But, as French farmhouse ale, it does its job well in my estimation.

48 Trader Joe's Winterfest United States Doppelbock 3.6

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 7

Wow! A six pack of doppelbock for 5.49! Wait...it must taste like crap, right? This just doesn't add up...I'm suspicious...but thirsty. Fine, I'll get a sixer. Hmm...not bad, not bad at all. Malty, sweet aroma, dark brown body, smooth and clean, this Doppelbock is for real. Its not the greatest I've ever had, but for that price, I think I'll be back. A really enjoyable beer without being punished come bill paying time.

49 Skopje Skopsko Macedonia Bohemian / Czech Pilsener 2.1

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 3 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 3 | Overall: 3

Pours pale gold with a midly malty aroma dominated by stale/cardboard. Which carries through the flavors and confirms my worst fears about this beer destroyed by distance. It may have had some nice malt and hop flavors, but after whatever this has been through, I sure wouldn't know...

50 New Glarus Unplugged Enigma United States Wild Ale 4.4

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 10 | Overall: 9

An incredibly rich aroma of cherries, vanilla, wood, acid, malty caramel, hints of cocoa, fruit and grain. Cloudy brown with nearly no foam. Soft mouthfeel initially followed by an acidic bite...nice contrast. Malty sweet, tart acid, fruity cherries, vanilla and toasty oak, quite nutty, as well. A very complex and even more impressively, well balanced brew. Thanks, Dan. This is awesome.
